Sounds from XP screech like a banshee

Upon startup, the initial XP start-up tune does not sound like a tune at all - it sounds like a screeching banshee. Obviously, the sound is screwed somehow...

This problematic sound affects the performance in other places, such as trying to watch any video. If the computer starts up with the banshee sounds, I know I will not even be able to watch videos (with the sound turned down) as the performance of the videos is severely decreased (very slow, choppy).

But if the computer starts up with the normal XP tune, I know I'll be able to watch videos with both visual and perfect sound.

I've tried updating a lot of whatever drivers, and codecs, I could find, but I'm at a loss.

It may have started with Eve Online crashing the computer to reboot, but now I believe that if I can find why the sound isn't working right, and why it degrades computer performance, the game will not be an issue (it didn't use to be before this sound problem).

I would go back to updating the sound card/chip driver since the problem is system wide and not related to a specific audio file.

If you don't know the exact name of your sound device try Belarc Advisor http://majorgeeks.com/download1385.html it will list all your major computer components so you know which driver you need.

    Thanks.

interestingly, it isn't entirely system wide - TeamSpeak works flawlessly.

Out of the last ten crash-reboots (playing a game), the last three have had the OS restarting with all sound working again...
but I know it won't be long until I start the computer (crash or no crash) and the Windows' sounds will be screwed up again.

(nterestingly, it isn't entirely system wide - TeamSpeak works flawlessly.)
do u use a usb head set Usb headset's have there own sound hardwhere built in thats why wont have a Problem with teamspeak and other Voip programs its not useing for soundcard for the audio
If u have onboard sound and are useing a Sound Card then Remove the card and try the Onboard sound

First thing I would do is, as has already been suggested, to completely uninstall all sound device drivers, reboot, and then reinstall them. If that doesn't work, try a different soundcard, or the on-board sound if your motherboard has one of those.

    Nope, no USB microphone.

I will uninstall all sound drivers (it doesn't have a sound, nor a video, card), and try again soon!
