The only time I use IE. is to download the updates, can't seem to be able to get FF. to work. If I never use IE. do I need to install sp2 or the updates?

SP2 is not soley for the benefit of IE. It is a complete OPERATING SYSTEM update, so yes, it is recommended that you install it. Please follow all backup precautions for your own safety, however.

FF does NOT support ActiveX which is what the windows update site uses for its functionality. That is why FF won't work there ;)
