    Good afternoon,

The fine gentlemen over in the malware forum have been helping me to combat a nasty bug on my PC.

At this point (at their recommendation) I need help with 2 items.

1)The bug they're helping me with knocked out my audio driver. Would anyone here know how to reinstall it?

    2) Also, could somebody please walk me through the steps in properly downloading/installing SP2 for windows XP? I've tried a few times over the last few years, and have never been able to succesfully do it. I'm confident that with somebodies guidance I'll be able to install it... but some of the instructions I was given last time (from the windows folks) were a bit 'over my head' to figure out on my own.

    Thanks in advance!

http://www.windowsupdate.com/ should help you get SP2.. should be quite self explanatory..

If that's too taxing... grab this download http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en and just run the executable file.. that should install SP2 straight away..

BUT.. why not go straight to SP3? (again on windowsupdate.. or http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4 here)

As far as the audio driver is concerned.. do you know what soundcard or motherboard you have? If not we can talk you through finding out.

    Jeff...

As mentioned above, we will need to know the make and model of your PC and/or motherboard (or sound card if not using the on-board sound). If you're unsure, download and run http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181 and post the info it provides....

Computer is a Dell Dimension 8250.

Everest tells me I have a Creative SB Live! Series Audio Processor (i've never installed a sound card myself; whatever I have came with the system).

Hey guys... not sure if you're very backlogged, or maybe my thread slipped thru the cracks (or maybe I didn't post the correct info you needed... if so, lemme know).

Thx. (oh, and btw, I did successfully get SP3! Just still need a little help with the driver).

There is no backlog, you have to follow the instructions so you can be helped. After you run the everest report you need to post the report so we can see it and then we can assist you further.

When Everest is done scanning, click "Report" at the top of the Everest window, click next to get to "Report Profile", select "Hardware related pages", click next, select "Plain Text", click "Finish". Then when it is done processing, click "Save To File". Save it where you want to. (I would use Desktop.)
Click "Go Advanced" in the MG reply box, scroll down a little way until you see "Manage Attachments", click it, browse to your file, click "Upload", and close the window. Then submit the post. You may have to also type something in the reply box, like, "Here's my report.", so that it will submit.

Follow these instructions on how to post a everest report

Infected I'm not sure why I can't get this working for you but I always say starting over to see where my mistake was is best.
First install the dell chipset drivers. then install the dell audio drivers. Hopefully this will get you running. If not post back and I will continue to research your problem and enlist someone else to assist with this problem

Ok man, thanks for all the help... I realize how hard it must be to solve these types of problems remotely.

Before I try your advice, I was fooling around with troubleshooting on my own, and it appears I might have found a corrupted driver. Its name is: "Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibility Driver".

I found it by going into Device Manager in the "sound video and game controllers" section. This driver is flagged with an exclamation point. Windows however does not seem to want to let me reinstall or update it.

Any thoughts? Or am I way off base?

One more post... sorry to keep bombing away in this thread. I simply uninstalled that corrupted part, rebooted, and I now have sound... the control panel shows that SB Live is now my default audio device!

Do I need to find/reinstall that Microsoft Driver for any particular reason?

After all the problem you had if you have it working and it is working properly don't do anything, until prompted or you have another system problem. I will continue to research this and will post something as soon as I find out how to resolve this new issue. In the mean time someone may come through with a suggestion or even a fix.

That driver is most likely an update or a driver MS thinks is needed to operate some of the programs you are going to come across that will make your system compatible.

If in the next few days the problem returns. Install the chipset driver and then the audio driver that should bring you back on board permanently.
