OK -tech support at work said SP2 was 'great' and insisted I apply it.
I did, and my PC is running so slow that it is unusable.
This is a Toshiba Satellite A40-S270.

Had tech support come up and they worked on it for two hours.
They said that there appeared to be an 'unusual number of page faults/page requests' and played around with some settings but did not document the changes they made. The hard drive light seems to indicate a substantial amount of I/O - far in excess of what I would expect from just having 1 or 2 apps (Outlook and Word) running.

So, System Restore was 'somehow' turned off and there are no Restoration Points prior to 2:45 yesterday afternoon ( SP2 was applied 2 days ago and 'said' it was creating a Restore Point before it installed itself - where did it go??? and how did System Restore get 'turned off' and all the prior Restore Points deleted????).

Anyway, I see that i can use Add/Remove Programs to remove SP2 - but what can I do about the tweaking that tech support did in trying to get SP2 to work?

I'm going to do a complete backup and then try to remove SP2 next week.

Any ideas on how to get back the machine back to the state it was in on Monday?

    Thanks in advance.......

check for any driver, bios or chipset updates for you laptop. Often, especially with laptops, there are some drivers or chipset updates that need to be applied.

Try this to identify all processes that are running.

Thanks for the reply - I'm not sure I would feel comfortable making more changes or additions to the system as it's not too stable as it is.

It takes 8-10 mins for the Control panel to load - I'm getting tired of that flashlight moving back and forth.....

Well, I've been applying all of the Toshiba updates as I received them.

I'm still amazed at how much is 'different' pre and post SP2.

I emailed Microsoft tech support and still have not heard back from them.

If I can't use the System Restore I will just back up and then use Add/Remove Programs on Monday to uninstall SP2.....

It was working fine before SP2 - I lost a day and a half and the project will not tolerate missing a deliverable/due date. I'll make up for it over the weekend but I have to at 100% functionality/thru put for next week.

agreed, that is why I suggested the search for updates..

there was another poster recently who had the same issue and updated his chipset drivers and he's all set now.

Also one should always do a defrag (if you haven't) after installing sp2.

Thanks for the suggestions - I wish the tech resources here were aware of the restrictions concerning the laptops. Does Microsoft have a list (URL?) of the affected laptops so I can determine if this one (Toshiba A 40-S270) is one that requires the special attention?

Interesting advice....I may try to follow up on these as time permits.
Unfortunately, I am under a severe deadline time crunch and I do not have the luxury of going thru several trial and error efforts right now.

I have a first pass at deliverables done and out to the client for review.

I used Control Panel -> Performance to check out what the system was doing as the Windows Task Manager was showing no greater than 40% CPU and the Page File Usage is flat lined at 328 MB.

The Performance graph is showing that the Pages/sec and Avg.Disk Queue Length are consistently maxed out at the top of the chart. The % Processor Time looks to be 40% at most here too. I noticed that the 'disk activity' light stays on constantly too.

So, whatever has happened appears to be I/O or DASD related.

Running the SP2 Uninstall after this.

I'll update when it is done......

    Thanks again.....
