Ok, you might want to check my last thread for background info:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=86465

I did a repair install. Problem is, it got rid of SP2! Went to Windows Update to get it, downloaded it ok, but I get an error when installing. "Control id not found".
I think this pops up when it is creating the sp2.cab file. I think.

Anybody any ideas? I had SP2 installed before I did the repair install.
Also, a few other updates weren't installed. Forgot error messages but they were security updates: 810577 and 823559.

While I'm here, I got an error during the repair install:

"Sub-component Com+ raised an exception while processing the OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION setup message.
    d:\nt\com\com1x\src\complussetup\comsetup\csetuputil.cpp (line3406)
    Error code = 0x007007f
The specified procedure could not be found.
Failed to load the library 'c:\windows\system32\catsrv.dll'

I know thats a bit long-winded but thought I'd give full error message to try help you guys out. Do you think this might have something to do with SP2 failing to install?

Cheers for the quick reply snakefoot. Alas none of the two methods worked.
Firstly, I havn't got eTrust. Tried disabling my AV (which is Avast! by the way), but still got the control id not found error.
It stopped when creating the sp2.cab file.

    Any other suggestions?

    Maybe?

start > run > (type) sfc /scannow (Note. There is a space after sfc)
When prompted > insert your installation CD > Reboot after the process has finished.

Any changes? I'm thinking that you might need to do a clean install, but hopefully not.

Hey krit, ran sfc, no change.
Really don't want to have to do a clean install. Havn't got many back-up options at the minute and that would be a definite last resort.
    Anybody else got any ideas?

Did you ever check add/remove programs to see if SP2 was still listed? Repair installs do not remove reg entries for it. You need to remove it, if you see it.

Thanks for the quick reply, sorry I took so long to get back to you.

The only entry in add/remove programs related to SP2 that I can see is:
Windows Hotfix(SP2) [see Q329115 for more information]
There's no option to show updates.

I went to remove this but it said a whole load of other hotfixes might not work properly. Sould I just go ahead and remove it?

    No.

I'm unsure of the problem. You may want to see if you can go through the manual uninstall procedures of SP2.

From the Start menu-->click Run-->then type C:windows$NtServicePackUninstall$spuninstspuninst.exe in the Open box-->and click OK.

Ok tried that, got a 'Windows cannot find file blah...'
Checked myself in Explorer, path doesn't exist.
Any other suggestions? Or am I gonna have to do a clean install? Please say no!

On Adrynalyne's post, you did put the proper ---> \ <--- marks in the appropriate places?

Typically, if you just use explorer to browse for the $xxxxxx$ folders/directories, they will be hidden.

Make sure within EXPLORER, click the TOOLS menu, then FOLDER OPTIONS. Next click on the VIEW tab. Within "Advanced Settings" make sure show hidden files and folders is checked, Press OK.

The "proper" places is the following:

    C: windows $NtServicePackUninstall$ spuninst spuninst.exe (replace the blank space with ----> \ <---- )

I was thinking you did that for some sort of security reason. :)

Put the '\' in and it says it refers to a location that is unavailable.
I already had hidden files and folders option checked. The folder just ain't there!

Cheers for the help. Going to bed now (its after 2 here!). I'll check back in the morning.

Make sure you don't have AntiVirus active while installing SP2 as that can interfere with the process.

    Check post #3.

Do you think maybe there are some reg keys left over from the repair install that are preventing the install?

Personally, and you won't like this, I would format and start again.

I don't often suggest this, but in your case, with all the previous and current problems, it's warranted.

Was really hoping it wouldn't come to that but looks like you might be right.
Have to buy an external hard-drive or something first though.

    Cheers for the help anyway!
