I recently reformatted and installed XP Home SP2 on a Dell Latitude C610 notebook. Everything seemed to go fine except for the following hitch: Once I started running windows updates after the install, I got to the SP3 update and it fails about 3/4 of the way through with the following message:

A component's file does not match the verification information present in the component manifest SP3 update

It then prompts me to uninstall the SP3 update. Nothing at all has been done to the computer aside from updates since the install of the OS. Anybody ever come across this before?

Try uninstalling all of your internet security software. Using available icons to disable protection does not completly stop all protection (some files remain locked by protection services). If you are concerned about dowloading sp3 without any security from MS through updates, download and save it to your desktop from here....

then run after you have uninstalled your AV/Malware software. It should install ok now.

The first few times I tried to install it (I've tried 3 or 4 times now) I had no AV installed. AVG is installed now, and it's still doing the same thing.

I tried the Microsoft fix, but still no joy. Exact same issue.

Ok.... I think that one or more of your files have become corrupted during the fresh install of your OS. I think that the best solution would be to format and install your OS again :cry nightmare I know ;)!! there is a way thhat you can slipstream SP3 onto your OS disc though I would make a copy of your OS disc and use the copy disc to try slipstreaming sp3 onto so you dont end up with a dud OS disc. A run through of how to do this is found here........

I think that would be a better option for you, as then you would have an OS disc at its proper service pack with out having to resolve issues like this every time you need to install your OS.
