i have 7.1 speakers and plan on mounting them on my walls/ceiling sometime soon....my computer isnt exactly in the center of the room in any way, more to the left or my far wall. So.....im not really sure where i should put the speakers....i was thinking on the ceiling behind me and on the wall to my left and ceiling to my right. I think i would just keep the 3 front speakers on my desk. Sorry its kinda confusing but could i get some suggestions?

You would better put them on the wall it wouldn't be safe to put them on the ceiling.

Why not? I have my two rear speakers mounted there. The biggest issue for me is to be able to hide the speaker cables (all cables for that matter, border line OCD).

Hears my take on your situation. When dealing with speaker placement you need to remember as you spread out the speaker placement you have to decide on a center point from which you will be doing most of your listening , we'll call that ground Zero. If ground Zero is at computer station then _ you should be sitting near the middle of their placement (after all you got this hi-fi surround sound set up.) if you dont the surround sound wont distribute to you the proper effects and (sound delays(your rear speakers deliver) and your lefts melt into you right speackers and so on, not good.

if desktop will not be the main listening area then figure out where it will be and use that ground zero point as a mid point referance and spread up to a few feet apart the left and rights (never place comp skeaks. as far apart as a stereo reciever would be , theyre designed differantly.)

Putting your pc skeaks too close to cieling will cause a loss of surround sound effects (remember your ears need to be in the center of all action ) if not, again you'll loose some of the special effects and rich sounds

always make sure your Bass speaker is in middle of lt & rt speaks and keep it on or almost on the floor( there is almost a dramatic differance in the sound as you place either on floor or 4 inches or 10 inches off of floor , so test back and fourth to see what you like

Lastly look in your new manual, most times itl have proper speaker placement diagrams and options . Hope all this SSoouunnddss GGooodddddddddd !!,good luck & enjoy your new sounds!! E:) ric

on the wires showing issue , placing them where you talk about makes it impossible to hide wires , if that was a maj issue w/ you perhaps you should take them back and get wireless speakers. "logitech" makes some awesome 7.1 wireless speakers. Check their site out , they will show pics and details of their products

hiding the wires isnt a problem for me, my dad works in constuction and is kinda gettin into this. His idea was to run the speaker wires through my atic and across to wherever im putting my speakers and then just drill a hole in the ceiling and drop the wire through. One problem though about putting them on the eiling or not is that the wall to my right is considerably farther away than the wall on my left so i kinda have to use the ceiling for that one...

sounds like a plan then w/ dads help, one thought though , remember if your going to place speakers so far away that your using more speaker wire length than came with the speakers then your talking about splicing it and adding more length to it. If so you could cauise a drop in decible quality , in that case youd need to upgrade the speaker wire guage (thickness , to a thicker guage). Good luck Eric
