I have a fairly new Toshiba laptop with Vista. I just noticed today that the speaker volume keeps going down to zero no matter what I set it at. I can move the slide bar up to 100 and in a few seconds it starts sliding down by itself. Is my computer haunted? No really, why is this happening and how can I fix it? Thanks.:confused

I don't have Vista so i'm not sure if this will work but i found a similar problem in some forum with the exception that it was with a mic volume.

Try Start>Control Panel>Sound then select Recording tag, and click Properties, select Levels tag, and adjust the Microphone level. Then go to Advanced tag, and untick the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" from Exclusive Mode.

Though if there is something similar to the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" for your normal audio then that might fix the problem. It may take a little looking around to see if theres a similar tab.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you very much for your reply. Since I wrote this thread I found out what the problem was that I was having . It was the speaker driver. I had to uninstall it then reinstall. It's working fine now. Again, thank you very much for replying and trying to help.

Interesting, thanks very much for posting back. The mp3 sounded like a bad speaker wire to me. How did you record the faulty sound--if you don't mind saying?

I steered clear of this thread, because I wasn't sure the driver install would fix your problem.
It's good to know it did. Thanks for posting your fix. :)

My problem had nothing to do with recording. It had everything to do with not being able to hear anything. When I would click on the volume control in the task bar and raise the speaker volume it would go all the way back down to zero on its own. It turned out to be the driver. A simple uninstall and reinstall solved the problem.

Sorry, Loberg. I didn't re-read the whole thread and thought I was responding to a different thread about sound breaking up during high PC activity.

Glad you got things working. :)
