Recently a Dell technician installed on my Dell Dimension 8300 a new audio card Audigy 2 SB0240 and replaced my 5.1 speaker system with a new Creative Inspire T7900 7.1 system. As a result of these changes the center speaker on the new 7.1 system started to hiss loudly. When I turned the volume up the hiss got louder..........unbearable in fact. So Dell replaced my 7.1 speaker system with the exact same system. The conclusion is that the loud hissing noise from the center speaker continues.

I have noticed that when I open the Creative Audio Console the 7.1 configuration is not even on the list of choices. Only the following choices are given: headphones, 2/2.1, 4/4.1, 5.1, 6.1.

Am I out of line in assuming that it's a configuration problem?

Your new card as you have noticed doesn't support 7.1 speakers so someone goofed. Its probably about greed, they thought they could make the more expensive 7.1's work like 6.1's and keep the extra money they cost, but it didn't work.
