Speakers giving an annoying bass sound...

Hey all. I'm having a problem with my computers speakers. They're basic Dell speakers that came with my Dimension 5100 three years ago. I recently had to reformat my computer, but I downloaded the correct drivers for the audio and I get pretty decent sound out of them. The only problem is that I keep getting this crappy, staticky, bass "thump" every few seconds when they're playing sound. I can't tell if it's a random occurance or if it actually is from the music being played. I also think it's weird that this is happening on the main speakers and isn't coming out of the woofer that I have. If anyone has any insight into this problem, I'd be very thankful.

 

Since it isn't coming from the sub, it could possibly be a broken speaker in one of the mains that when a certain tone is played it makes a 'cracking' sound. I'm assuming that the mains are 2-way, and since you said it was like a bassy thump, I'd look at the mid-range speaker. Hope that helps!!

 

Which is the mid-range speaker?

 

If it is a 2-way, it'll be the larger of the 2. The smallest one would be the 'tweeter,' or high range. If, by chance, it's a 3-way, then it would be the one in the middle. However, since you have a sub, I doubt that it is a 3-way.
