Alright, I got this pet Peeve since I got my system. Every time I open the start menu, I get a balloon pointing at "All Programs" that say's, "there are more programs than can be displayed...etc.,etc.,". Well, Duh! Maybe that is why it is called "All Programs". Does anyone know how to disable that d#*n balloon?? It blocks half of the Start Menu to tell me what I already know? Come on, how stupid do these people think we are?

To Disable The Notification Area Balloon Tips
Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
    2. Navigate to the following subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
    3. Right-click the right pane, create a new DWORD value, and then name it EnableBalloonTips.
    4. Double-click this new entry, and then give it a hexadecimal value of 0.
    5. Quit Registry Editor. Log off Windows, and then log back on.

These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for this user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

Thanx, Brownizs, I will give this a look and see if I am irritated enough and far enough along to tackle this without too much difficulty. You are a scholar and a gentleman. ;)

OH, by the way, wouldn't it be easier if I just double clicked the Regedit shortcut in my Hacking Tools Folder where I keep my Rescource Hacker program? I thought that it was a productive effort to create one when I created the folder. :D

Check with Shadow_Puter_Dude, he would tell you if it would be good or not. The easiest way is to download TweakUI from Microsoft.com under WinXP PowerTools to disable Balloon Notifications also.

You can download the Registry Edit document which is really good that contains all of them from http://www.winguides.com.

Hey, Browniz, I tried the registry trick, but it didn't seem to work, not only for my start menu balloon, but even the notification balloons seemed to survive it.

I did a restore to undo the DWORD value but I was sure it would do something. Maybe I did something wrong. The only place I deviated was I did a complete shutdown instead of just a logoff. Can't explain it.

I will try the link and I already have the TweakUI program installed on my computer. I will see what the link has to say about the balloon removal. Had you ever tried that Proceedure? I am really curious why it didn't work. Thanks again. :)

It should not matter if a shutdown or logoff. Try TweakUI. I double checked the WinGuides Registry guide and what I posted from Microsoft is correct.

OK, I didn't think it should have made a difference but, that was the only thing I could think of that might have messed it up so thouht I would mention it. Maybe I will try it again, and double check everything, but I really have more pressing matters to work out for the time being so will put it on the back burner. fatal error problem takes priority, and I have to figure out how to get the minidumps to open. I will let you know when I get around to it and have time to redo it. Thanx anyway.
