Speccy freezing my computer

Hey guys. I installed Speccy at a friend's recommendation, but when I run it, it basically freezes my computer. My hard drive activity light stays on, so I assume it is heavily accessing my hard drive, and my programs freeze, and sometimes the mouse freezes as well. After about 5-10 minutes my computer will recover somewhat, enough for me to access Task Manager and close Speccy. I've noticed that when I do that, Steam and Firefox both start using more memory than they were before; I think Speccy is stopping them from using as much memory as they normally would. When I reset my computer to factory defaults a few days ago, I installed Speccy after install and ran it, and it had no problems. However, after installing all my usual programs, the problem has returned. My friend thinks it could be related to my Nvidia drivers or PhysX drivers; is that likely? I have an Nvidia GeForce GT 420M video card in my laptop. Could it be conflicting with my security software? I'm running Avira anti-virus, Spybot and Comodo Firewall. Thanks.

    Greetings, Skater901...

Is this program or this program the 'Speccy' to which you are referring? If so, I find this very odd - I've never known Speccy to cause such problems...

And, if so, you might try uninstalling the program, see if your symptoms change...also, what was the reason for installing Speccy? If it's just system info you're after, there are other such freeware programs available...

    Yes, Speccy from Piriform.

Uninstalling the program won't remove the symptoms, because the symptoms are caused by running the program. If I just don't use it, there's no problems.

The main reason I got it was for temperature monitoring; a lot of other programs I've tried haven't worked. However I am very curious as to why it's doing this. In my experience, Piriform make good software, so this behaviour is very unexpected...

Agreed - I've used and recommended Speccy (and other Piriform products) many times...

Quickie: do the symptoms present when you boot into Safe Mode (assuming, of course, that Speccy will run in Safe Mode)?

You might consider contacting Piriform, let them know what's going on - I'm sure they'd appreciate it...

Just tried it in safe mode, and the temperature monitors didn't work, it said a DLL failed to load. I think it was called SPC? Speccy didn't freeze my computer, so I suspect this DLL is related.

Again, that is something the Piriform people need to know. Who knows - you might have come up with a new bug...;)

As far as temp. monitoring, I've used HWMonitor with good results...

Fair enough, I shall tell them about it! I shall also investigate HWMonitor, thanks for the info.

Quick question, do I need to pay to get support? I tried poking around their support but it seemed like I needed a paid account to get support for their stuff.

It's free and so no support comes with it. But, why do you need support? Just download and use it. If you have questions about it, ask here in the forum.

Yikes - just noticed that. Oh, well - cancel the support angle, but the forums should be free, and probably the best route anyway...

Uh, MajorGeeks forum is free. What forum are you talking about when you say "the forums should be free"? I saw no support forum on the HWMonitor website.

    Hey...

We're talking about the Speccy/Piriform forums - that's what this thread is all about (HWMonitor was just mentioned as an alternative temperature monitoring solution)...

OK, I guess I follow that now. The flow of comments in this discussion has been a little unclear. Apparently, in post #7, Skater901 was referring to Speccy/Piriformd in his second paragraph, although he did not explicitly say so. And, since his first paragraph referred to HWMonitor, I thought his second paragraph was also referring to it.

It's alright - you're excused, especially since you only have an Air Force background...

    ;) :-D :major

I thought the conversation was easy to follow, as the problem I've been having is with Speccy, ergo I need support for it.

I'll go post on their forums soon, also I downloaded HWMonitor and it works like a charm, thanks for the suggestion. :)

Yeah, HWMonitor is good stuff (as is its companion program, CPU-Z)...

Good luck - keep us posted...:major
