Am running a Compaq Presario 5WV257 700 mgh AMD with 20gb hard drive, 256mg RAM using Windows ME and Internet Explorer IE6 (updated, reinstalled and updated again!) and while not neworked, am using High Speed Wireless Internet.
I cannot open government of Ontario pages like: www.mto.gov.on.ca or www.gov.on.ca (always comes up Page cannot be displayed etc. etc.) and I'm sure I could at one time. I have no popup stopper, have just installed a personal firewall but couldn't access these pages before installing it either and have asked several tech groups and we cannot figure out what is going on. These pages open on all computers at my work and on my old computer that the kids use for games. Any ideas????

Go to start.. click on run.. type the following

    NOTEPAD C:\WINDOWS\HOSTS

if it opens a file up that looks like this

AND, there are lot of entries similar to the "127.0.0.1 localhost" then, delete them all.

if you're unsure.. then copy the text from the file and paste it to a post and I'll look at it for you.

IF the file doesn't exist. You will recieve a warning that says "C:\windows\hosts" does not exist, would you like to create a new file? choose no and cancel that. IF you get this message, then your hosts file is NOT affected and we'll have to look elsewhere for a resolution to your problem.

I have heard of things similar to this before but it was related to zone alarm. You may try it without zone alarm or you may just download Kerio for test to see if it is related. If memory serves it was something about the page crashes the first time and then zone alarm won't let it in.... kind of fuzzy.

Okay Kodo,I'm home and I did as you said. This is the only thing that showed up in Notepad:
    ##############
Not one word, just that! Any idea now????
    Thanks.

micr0dv8 Thanks for trying - but it did it before I installed Zone as well.

If you’re Network settings are correct and it is not a Software Firewall issue

Try to optimize the TCP/IP stack (see below).

If it did not help try to reset the TCP/IP stack.

Link to: How to Reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in Windows XP.

    To Optimize.

    Download DrTCP:
    DSLreports DrTCP021.exe

Run the program, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

    Start with:

    MaxMTU - DSL =1492 Cable = 1500 ISDN = 1322 DialUp = 576

Tcp Receive - 256960 (This is the varaible to play with!)

    Window Scaling - Yes

    Time Stamping - No

    Selective Acks - Yes

    Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

    Black Hole - NO

    Max Duplicate - 2

    TTL - 64

Notice it said above Start with

These settings are not written in "stone" there is variability depending on the computer other setting. So try few setting and measure your Download for each setting.

In addition, in case a person has a Router the Router's MTU if set differently can affect the general MTU.

Link: Measuring the "Speed" of Internet Connection.

Have the same problem back again!!! I had to use System Restore for some reason as I lost some files somehwere and it got stuck. so had to hit Ctrl Alt Del to get it going again. When I finally got it going again it is back the way it was before and the drtcp thing is still at the settings you told me to use that worked last time! Really a messed up computer now I think. So once again my government of Ontario pages don't load on either IE or Firefox or any others I tried. (firefox says timed out when trying to open these pages) Also, my Outlook Express takes forever to load. Any new ideas??? I really appreciate your help!
