Specifying drives to search with Search Companion

I just installed (2) 1 TB drives (well, hubby did), and would like to utilize the 2nd drive as a back-up of the first, without going the RAID route. So, I actually have 2 questions:

    1. Is there a way to weekly back-up drive 1 with a choice of what to back up ? and
    2. Is there a way to specify, as a default, the drives searched in Search Companion. I have found a way to specify a single drive, but no way to search all drives EXCEPT the back-up drive. I.e., I can take a drive out of the "look in" string, but only for that particular search.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

If you're not going the RAID route, then the next question is do you wish to backup the 1st and main drive fully as in a clone or image of the first which would give you a backup file in which you can just recover the whole operating system, installed applications and files, or is it you just wish to backup specific files?

The Clone/Image route would allow you to recover your system fully in the event of a crash of the 1st main HDD.

A backup of specific files and data, would not allow you to recover your system fully, but you would have to re-install the operating system and all the applications again and then copy your backed up data across.

The Clone/Image route would be my option and one I use and the application I favour is Acronis True Image, but a freebie is available in Macrium Reflect

If going the data backup of specific files, then somethink like SyncToy or Karens Replicator would do, also Acronis True Image allows specific folders to be backed up if you need.

EDIT: forgot your second question, could try this http://www.winhelponline.com/articl...n-pointing-to-a-specific-folder-or-drive.html

Thanks very much for your reply, Halo, I will check out the two back-up utilities that you mentioned, because I want indeed to just back up some data. And many thanks for the Macrium Reflect link, I will also check that out for backing up my C drive.

As to the link for specifying the drives in the search parameter, that was the place I had found, but that only allows me to specify one drive. I would like to search all my drives, except the 2nd TB back-up drive.

PS. to my last post...I have downloaded both back-up utilities and Karen's will be the first one tried....but it looks like either one can be the ticket...

I have spent a lot more time searching for an answer to my question about specifying the drives to be searched with search companion, but I am unable to find any answers.
I cannot be the only one who wants to exclude certain drives from searches :(
The winhelp site only explains how to search a single drive by default. I am afraid to play with adding more drives into such a script, lest I loose all ability to search.
If someone knows how to specify drives (plural) in the "look in" string, I would appreciate the help.
    Thanks

    Greetings, Marisilver...

Can't help you with the Search Companion, but seems like there may be alternatives to explore: Agent Ransack comes to mind, and I'm sure there are other local search engines available...
