I see most queries regarding text to speech are from 2005.
Is there any new (hopefully free) speech to text programs available for Win XP or 7?

Before I go searching, your title says Speech to Text but the body of your post says Text to Speech. Which one of these are you actually asking about?

    Thanks for the quick response.
I am looking for Speech to Text similar to the over-priced Dragon Naturally Speaking program.
Most of my searches find Speech to Text advertised but on opening the sites they are in fact Text to Speech.
I tried Microsoft but again received T to S.
I receive many hand-written manuals that I have to convert to Word for magazines so Speech to Text is required.

I got Dragon 11 premium for $49. from Tiger Direct (after a rebate) but it seems to be on sale quite a bit lately.

I don't understand what your saying about the MS speech to text? you can't download it, install it? find it? use it?
Micrsoft has a SPEECH to TEXT dictation "program".
You have to download a file called SpeechSDK51.exe.
Run it - it is a self extracting zip. Open the folder where you extracted it and run setup.exe

See the picture it says Speech Recognition. I was goofing with it and bought Dragon, it is supposed to require less training. The links go to the speechSDK and the second is how to use it.

I"m wondering how you made out with this, as I'm running Win XP Pro with Microsoft office 2010, I've learned that it isn't available to install through the 2010 office or 2007 office neither.. normal or should i say easier fix of just adding it from the control panel's add/change option avail within the add/remove programs dialog box. I've come across directions that seem to be almost workable but once we come to the point to double click the Alternative User Input pull down, you know where u would select the whole recognition sotware part and be able to install it from that point, nah.. can't do it. and Win XP doesn't offer the recognistion software needed either. Vista does, and naturally Win 7 too, but if u have WIN XP you must use a MS office version 2003 or older :( geez think i should petition some sort of patch/hot fix from my buddies in tech support at microsoft.com? LOL.. can you even do that? Yet another hour of useless google searching to further sink myself in this biggest distraction of productivity yet. I just wanted a damn software to hear my voice and turn it to text. surely dragon can do it, microsoft must of thought of it first, and i thought maybe implemented it somewhere amongst all these other useless bloatwares included with my dinosaur PC. But after 2 hours of looking I'm throwing in the towel for the night, i shall not abandon my idea though.. i may finally get a book or two finished. and if none the less i can get my paper trail gradually reduced finally jumping into technology, even if it is headfirst. i mean doogie howser, he was recording his journaling by computer what 20 years ago, i should of followed suit then, now i have years and years of writings to translate over.. and i'm sure many more years of awesome dictations and thoughts to come. anyone have any suggestions please feel free.. thanks
