Can someone tell me how I can use my modem to it's full potential? I have a 56K modem but can only connect at 31.2K. Thanks for any help.

I'd load the make and model of my modem into a search engine with Init String Tweaks or something similar.

Keep in mind, IIRC, that 56k is not actually reachable, I think 52k is the max you will get. Also make sure you have the latest drivers for it...

The speed doesn't depend on your modem. It is a function of the phone number you use to dial in (traffic on that phone number), and the condition of your phone line.
Theoretically, you should get 56K. I remember from my dialup days, I was happy with 42.2! I don't think anyone gets 56K.

Try a newer and shorter phone line between the wall jack and your computer.

Thanks to both of you. I think I already knew what plodr said to be so but wanted someone a bit more knowledgable than I to weigh in on it. I'll try the suggestions from both of you just in case maybe it will make a little bit of difference. I live in a rural area that only has access to dialup service and ridiculously expensive satellite service.
    Again, thank you.

If you have more than one dialup number, try another one.
Years ago I was on Juno dialup and some numbers were faster than others.
