Splash screen

Not sure if this is the right place or the right name for my daughter's cp.

When the computer boots and the icons are displayed, there are the following items across the top:

My Comp, 3&half floppy disks, y:c, local disk, compact d.

The items are also in here cdrive, how can I remove this from the screen?

Also instead of the start button and all the other little items that are normally display across the bottom, they are in a box on the side, cannot remember how to get these to line up across the bottom.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

 

Just found out how to remove the side bar to the bottom of the screen.
