Is there a free spyware that can compete with spy sweeper or is it a smarter idea to buy spy sweeper right now i have spyware terminator installed, thanks.

Please see the how to protect yourself from malware thread for recommendations from the spyware experts here at Majorgeeks.

My personal opinion is that for any pay-for application on the market, there are better freeware alternatives.

I use SD&HJT,and this is all I have(exept ZA-Internet security),and I'm very satisfied withthis app.cos ,when you see what SD can offer, you can do what ever you want.

I use McAfee Suite because it came with my pc and was paid up for two years. Additionally I installed MSDefender and AdAware. I like McAfee better than I thought I would, but I believe in using at least one more spy smasher. The free ones do work well, do not interfere with other programs too much, and require only updates. This is the first time I have used pay programs for several years. The paid ones I used worked, but the free ones do too and the price is right.

srelt, don't get me wrong.but I know that MSDefender is memory eater.from other forums I was able to see that MSDin some cases eat between 40-50 megs,I think this is too much for spyware app.

Goran.P, no offense given, and none taken. I have never measured the drain for MSDefender, but I had not noticed the drain. Thanks for informing me. It is my least favorite program of that type.

I use AntiVir, Spyware Terminator, Arovax Shield, BHR 4.5 and Sygate Firewall and no decrease in performance. I used Defender off and on for awhile and noticed no performance drain with it at all. Spy Sweeper is definitely a quality product, but you can get equal or grater protection for free...

I used SpyBot and Adaware with so so results, then settled on Spy Scanner by Webroot, which I paid for. None are perfect, but Spy Scanner seems better IMO.

I have to agree that Windows Defender really kinda blows.

It is good to have real-time protection though. I believe that is the malware forums' ideal setup; an antispyware and antivirus app with real-time protection, and since there's no 100% effective product, a couple of other on-demand scanners to back those up. Hence why they seem to like suggesting online AV scanners - they're a good backup that won't cause conflicts. (More than one real-time scanner can cause issues)

    I personally would use:

AntiVir Personal Editon - Primary Antivirus
Bitdefender Online Scan - On demand scans
Kaspersky Online Scan - On demand scans

    Spyware Terminator - Primary Anti-Spyware
Spybot Search & Destroy - Mainly for immunization feature, but also on demand scans
    Ad-aware - On demand scanning.

Pretty darn effective protection, if I do say so, and I didn't pay a dime for it.

I've tried just about all of them and I would say Spy Sweeper stops about 99.9 % of the crap out there. I have it backed up with NOD 32 and Zone Alarm.

Thanks everyone. I downloaded and installed a program that interfered with m y ability to go online. After a "system restore," I am back on track. I appreciate your help and knowing what you find useful.

Spysweeper is great. They're a smaller company in Colorado I believe. Got to talk to their CEO the other day. Anyways, the thing about them is they only deal with anti spyware. Symantec has like 50 million products which makes me mad cause non of them work. Back on track though. What they were telling me was that since they're smaller they're focused on one product and making it better. Really impressed with them.
