I installed Spybot on my new XP Pro and a couple hours later when I tried to open it, I got "Application failed to start because framedyn.dll not found. Reinstalling the application may solve the problem". The only thing I deleted prior to this message was items found from running Ad-Aware and Spybot itself. Interestingly, once you click on the OK in the error message, Spybot opens normally without any prompting and seems to run properly. BTW, uninstalling and reinstalling Spybot doesn't fix the problem.

goto a command prompt and type PATH and hit enter

does the result include c:\windows\system32\wbem ?

    I get Path = C:\WINDOWS\System32
    There is no \wbem

Goto Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> System

    Select the 'Advanced' Tab

    Click 'Environment Variable'

In the lower of the 2 boxes select the variable called 'path' and click edit.

At the end of the vaiable value add the following text

    Code:
    ;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

INCLUDING the semicolon (its a delimiter)

so your whole path should look like this:

    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

you may also want to add a %SystemRoot% on its own (for the windows folder)

so the whole thing would be

    Code:
    %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem

Then reboot (probably not needed but I like to be sure) and try spybot again

I have a PATHEXT in the lower box. Is that the one to "edit"?

no. Thats the extensions. you need to edit the one that says 'path'.

If it isn't there then click new and type 'Path' in the top box and paste the following in the bottom box (without quotes)

Well, that sure as hell fixed that problem. Many thanks to you matt.chugg. Was my system not set up to handle Spybot?

Not specifically spybot it was an error with your 'Environment Variables'

In basic terms the path variable is a list of places where windows will look for a file. For example if you goto Start and then Run and type in notepad.exe and hit enter notepad will run. but how did windows know where to find notepad.exe ? It looked in all the locations in your 'path' variable and found it in c:\windws (%SYSTEMROOT%)

    Glad I could help!
