Spybot S&D problem

I have recently been having a problem with Spybot Search & Destroy updates, namely the TeaTimer updates and IE Plugin Updates - when I download these, my daughter's profile disappears off the computer and I end up having to do a system restore. I have 3 other profiles on the computer which are not affected. I still can download all the detection updates with no 'side effects' and at present just do not select the teatimer and plugin updates for download.

Can anyone advise why this may be happening and any suggestions to fix the problem? Or even if these 2 updates are required?

I currently have Windows XP OS.

    Thanks for any help.

I think most people here that use spybot, dont use the TeaTimer.

Ok, thanks for that ..... how do I deactivate the teatimer? And what about the IE plugin update problem? Or is this part of the teatimer?

    Thanks again

Im not sure about, the plugin update problem but here is how to disable the Tea Timer.

Try it first and see if that sorts out the update problem.

    How to disable Spybot's TeaTimer

    Just a thought!
From your start menu find spybot on the list.
Right click and chose Run as Adminstrator.
Then see if you can get the IE Plugin Updates.

    Hi again

I now want to find an alternative to Spypot S&D please as now even the most basic updates are causing my daughter's profile to be lost. I don't understand why it is only affecting her and am sick of the problem. Yet another system restore required today after 'bad check sums' on Spybot, this time causing the NTFS file system to be dirty, 6 deleted index entries and 6 recovered orphaned files (not happened before on Restores).

I have had Sypbot for at least 3 years and never had this problem before and am find it ironic that something that is supposed to be protecting my computer from problems is the only thing that is causing them!

Please can you recommend a suitable alternative. OS is Windows XP Home, I also have Avast antivirus, Ad-Aware 2008, SpwareBlaster, SpywareGuard. I have been recommended Spyware Doctor but unsure whether this is compatible with the other applications listed above.

Please advise and thanks for your help.

its an all round good egg

    Hi
About to download Spyware Terminator. Can this be downloaded while Spybot S&D is on my system? Should I uninstall Spybot before or after downloading Terminator?

Thanks - will try this first.

I've just had a look in the Control Panel, Remove Hardware and there appears to be 2 Spybot programmes: one just says Spybot S&D and the other says Spybot S&D 1.5.2.20. Is one just an update of the other? And I assume I need to remove both? Also some programs have an uninstall feature within them. Is this the case with Spybot or is removing it thru the Control Panel the most effective way?

Your daugther's account has been blocked out from her not understanding how to respond to the question TeaTimer asked. UNLOAD TEATIMER. Uninstall Spybot. Go into the ALL USERS\APPLICATIONS DATA folder and delete the Spybot folder. Now clean your registry, then compress it. Reboot and re-install Spybot. With any luck your problem should be solved.rolleyes

    Hi

    Unfortunately, this hasn't worked.

I followed your instructions to the letter with no problem with the deleting. However I noticed when I reinstalled Spybot that it said that the C folder already existed which made me suspect things hadn't been deleted properly. I unchecked the teatimer as instructed but when I downloaded the latest updates there was a teatimer update in it?? Should I have also gone in Remove Hardware in the Control Panel as, when I look at that now after the reinstall, I still have Spybot S&D and Spybot S&D 1.5.2.20?

So, in short, I still had to do a restore to regain my daughter's profile back.

Everything else on my system is working as it should except this. Is it worth trying an alternative program that targets the same 'baddies' as Spybot?

P.S. I didn't do the compress as was suggested in the other post as I don't know how to do that

Ok - please clarify things for me as I felt I did follow your instructions.

You said go into Program Files and delete entire folders for Spybot - is this the same as 'uninstall' as that is what I did. Or is there another way to delete the program?
I did go into documents & settings/my user name and all users in application data and deleted the folders (there was none in my name and one folder in all users). The show hidden files and folders is checked on my system already.

I think the confusion is that you did not do an uninstall of the program through Add/Remove in your control panel. You do that before you delete all the remaining files as Mark said.

Oh, great - now I have problems.

I got Mark's reply to right click and delete which I have done and now see the message to uninstall before that! So now I still have a desktop icon, there are still 2 Spybot Programs in Add/Remove. When I go to remove the Spybot S&D it says:

Messages file "C:\Program Files\Spybot-Search & Destroy\unins001.msg is missing. Please correct the problem or obtain a new copy of the program"

    Now what do I do?

This is what I did first time round:

    Program files/Spybot/uninstall
Documents & Settings/my user name and all users/application data - delete any Spybot folders
    Restart
Run CCleaner - scan for issues and fix
Download Spybot from your site (that's when I saw the C folder was still there so knew something wasn't right)

Then I got your message about right clicking on Spybot in Program files and deleting and I did this before I got Laura's message about uninstalling thru Add/Remove Programs!

So let me see if I have got this right to fix this from the current situation:

1.Download Spybot again from your site but don't update or immunize yet because it will still cause the same problem of losing a profile
    2. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall both Spybot programs
    3. Go to Program Files, right click on Spybot and click delete until gone
    4. Go to Documents & Settings etc etc
    5. Restart
    6. Run CCleaner and scan/fix issues
    7. Download Spybot again

    Yep...that is right. :)

Once you reinstall, you shouldn't have a problem with uninstalling it again. Just make sure you uninstall (through Add/Remove) all versions of spybot (if you have more than one, that is).

Ok, I just want to check before I carry on .... I have done the reinstall, restart, uninstall, restart. There is no Spybot folder in Program Files to delete and there are no folders in my user name/all users to delete. I assume this is a good thing (show hidden files and folders is checked) and that I do not need to do another restart but proceed straight to the CCleaner step?

    kiwiabroad Private First Class

Correction! There is a folder in Program Files but none in application data. I will go ahead with the deletion, restart, CCleaner, reinstall and let you know.

Why does a teatimer update appear in the download updates box when I have unchecked the teatimer when I reinstalled Spybot? Should I just uncheck this each time I download updates? I have not downloaded any updates but I have immunized - however it has immunized Software, Default & me but not administrator or the other 3 users on the computer?

So what you're saying is download it anyway, it shouldn't have any effect?

    Guess what? Success at last!!!!!!!!!!

The update has not affected any profiles and there is full immunization. Thank you so much and for being so patient. And I will keep your posts about uninstalling and deactivating tea timer ... just in case.

    Now I'm off to bed!!

    Thanks again:-D
