I started using spybot on my new PC real recent and downloaded the newest detection update which was published on 9-16-05.

Before this update, spybot would take around 15 minutes to complete, I have approximately 100GB of data on my HD's. Now, after the update Spybot scans for 29221 items and takes more then one hour to complete. It may be even closer to 1.5 hours.

Certain parts of the scan, it seems as though spybot stands still.

I also use Ad-aware, I use F-Prot for antivirus and I also use a-squared and HJT and other misc. spyware tools, and they all complete fine in reasonable time!

Does anyone else have this problem or is this an isolated problem? Any suggestions?

I guess after looking around, i can say it hangs, rather then becoming slow.

I have found the following ...

I don't have the "Set Affinity" option as I don't have dual processors nor a CPU with HyperThreading.

    Anyone?

Does Spybot hang on the same file. If, so then the file is probable corrupt.

Yes, this is during the scan and it hangs on the same file so a long period, then goes on (fast), hangs on another and so on. It does this with about 20-30 different items during the scan, but it will finally complete ... about 1.5 hours later!

Then the file or files it is hanging on are probably corrupt. I would run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal. To make sure your system isn't infected.

If the files are corrupt system files then sfc /scannow will replace those; word of caution if you run sfc then you will also need to run Windows Update after the scan is complete.

I completed everything in the sticky last night except for Spybot since it keeps taking so long. I did have the W32/Bereb-b on my system but has now been removed. I have scanned everything once again this morning to ensure nothing came back. Everything on the system looks clean now.

Can yuo tell me what sfc is? I will try that as well. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing spybot several times, even after the scans.

I am at work but would like for you to look at my HJT log as well. I used the HijackThis log file analysis to guide with some items and I believe it's clean now. I can't post it until later on tonight, though!

Thanks for the help thus far!

    sfc = System File Checker

Post a HJT log as an attachment; I'll take a look to make sure you are clean.

    Thanks for taking a look.

Unfortunately Spybot is still terribly slow!

I will try to work at this!
