Ok, not sure if this is more of a "Configuration" post/question, or that I simply need some Knowledge Base-type instruction/info.

I'm looking to "lose" (get rid of) Windows Defender "Real-Time" Antispyware on this PC, but that has been the only Real-Time protection of that type that I've had on here, as of late.

I'm wondering if I will still have the Real Time protection of Spybot S&D if the icon is not "Present" (displayed) in the taskbar, lower-right-hand corner near the clock - such as is the case with my AV protection icon? I feel comfortable seeing it there (my AV icon), and feel assured that it is "On", and Working, just by seeing it, visually, at all times (In fact, I don't think I have a choice or option of displaying or not displaying the icon in regards to my particular AV program of choice).

In other words, my understanding is that checking the boxes in Spybot's Tools, for the Resident and the Tea Timer, is sufficient, and will provide me the full/real time protection, without the icon for it displayed - correct?

Also, it appears to me that "Resident" and the "Tea Timer" are two separate "things" (components) - correct?

    Thanks in advance ...

The Tutorial of Spybot Search & Destroy gives a better explanation about these 2 than I ever could. ;)

Personally, I don't have the Tea Timer, find it too much of a resource hog, especially on an older computer. Also remember reading a post of a MAJOR GEEK to disable it but don't recall where.

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, and just use SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster).

Thank you. My "hope" is that it will be less of a "hog" (any bit at all) than Defender (and I am certain that it offers better protection). Would you be able to venture a guess on that - or might you actually know if that's the case?

    Thanks again,
    Glenn ...

Really?? I'm not at all familiar with Spyware Terminator (at the moment), but I do love the protection of SpywareBlaster. However, if I could lose a program anywhere along the line to save space/resources, I'd be happy to do so. That's why I'm trying to configure Spybot S&D to suit my needs - and get rid of Windows Defender in the process.

I'm going to look into configuring S/S&D as you mentioned, and I'll take a good, long peek at S.T. as well - thanks!

Sheesh. It seems to never fail. Now I'm having trouble (as in - I can NOT) "Update" the program Spybot S&D Version 1.6.0.12 ModVer 5.1.2600.5512).

Error reads: "Error retrieving update info file!" Then I get a pop-up box w/Yellow Excalmation Point saying: "Please select updated files from the list first" - and then I get the dreaded: "SDUpdate.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience ..."

    Any clues?

SpyBot recently updated, if your still having problems --- download the link and update with that.

    Hope it helps!

The Tea Timer watches out over your registry. You'll be getting pop-ups to notify you if there will be any changes, for instance when downloading new software etc. You either get to decline or accept the changes. I'm just way too lazy to be bothered by it :-D

Sorry, never used Windows' Defender so can't compare them, but if given the choice, I would take Spybot S&D anytime over Defender. I did find that Tea Timer slowed me down somewhat. It's up to you, just don't get 2 "live" ones. ;)

Just uninstall the old version of Spybot but prior to uninstalling FIRST undo the "immunization". Then install the newest version.
