Although I've never had a problem downloading and installing Spybot S&D, I've never been able to successfully update the product (Socket Error # 11001) except by downloading the latest updates that have thankfully been made available from Major Geeks on a timely basis. Does anyone have a clue how to remedy the "Socket Error #11001" problem?

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

That error is normally the result of not setting up your proxy server address in Spybot.
Do you use a proxy server?

    If so:

Go into Spybot > Mode > Advanced mode > Settings > Settings. About 2/3 of the way down the option tree there is a category "Web update". Check the last item in the list "Use proxy to connect to update server". A pop-up will come up were you can enter the information required.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't use a proxy server.

I found this by googling your error code. This was a solution given to someone with your same problem but different application.
An 11001 error means that the name you provided for a server in the client connection cannot be resolved to an IP address because DNS entries for that host name cannot be found.
Try using the appropriate (internal or external) IP address for the server in the client connection string instead of the name.

Thanks for your research Musksnipe! If your suggestion fixes the update problem I'll post a euphoric note here - but probably not before 5-29-07. I like the Hunter Thompson quote, by the way.

Yes and that is exactly what happens when a proxy server address is required.

However since hrothgar stated that a proxy is not being used, I would suggest that if a firewall is being used that SpybotSD.exe must be allowed to access the internet within the firewall.

If you have a firewall and are not sure if that is the cause of the problem, you could (for a short period) disable the firewall and see if the updates work properly.

If it is not the firewall, then it is possible that you have something (maybe malware) blocking your access to Safer Networking's websites. If this is the case, you should pay a visit to the Malware Forum and run the READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support cleaning procedure.

My thanks is given to all for their suggestions. Unfortunately, nothing so far has helped with the web updating problem. As I mentioned previously, I can manually download weekly updates from Major Geeks, however, so the situation is only perplexing.
I'm certain that the problem is unrelated to my firewall or to any infections. With all of the protective measures that I have in place and regular maintenance performed, my computer is otherwise running superbly and should be squeaky clean.
I should also mention that in addition to being unable to retrieve web updates, I have also found my web searches hindered when attempting to access tech or editorial articles or any useful information related to Spybot S&D. Strangely, the various servers connecting to the articles are invariably unavailable. Whether this is just coincidence or something to get paranoid about remains a big question in my mind. Perhaps, due to the product's proven usefulness, there is a kind of censorship present. I'll probably never know the answer.

Downloading manually is totally different than getting them via the program.

And how do you know this?

Did you disable or uninstall the firewall and then try? What firewall are you using?

How do you know that you do not have any malware? You should run thru the standard cleaning procedures in the Malware Forum (see the READ & RUN ME sticky).

How do you know that your hosts file has not been altered to block certain sites? Did you check it?

Did you also check to make sure that the sites you are having problems with have not been added to your Restricted Zone?

Have you flushed your DNS settings?

Have you uninstalled, rebooted (don't skip), then reinstalled Spybot? Are you using version 1.4?

If you wish to continue to resolve this, you need to post in the Malware Forum to work any possible malware issues. Or you need to psot in the Software Forum if you believe it is not-malware related. In fact, after saving my message, I'm going to move this thread to the Software Forum.
