I used to use SPYBOT S&D, then, ran into probs 'cause it started (after 6-7 months of great protection), using up 100% of CPU, then--never completed--froze up PC, and I had to RESTART (even, sometimes, power-cycle) me 'puter.

I have uninstalled & reinstalled several times during the last 3-4 months, only to find the same cr*p happening once again!

Anyone have any experience with this? I was VERY! pleased @ the beginning with the virus/spywre protection this program gave me.....but........I also have contacted SPYBOT directly (via email), and firefox (which is my browser) along the way----with no ressponses --- EVER!

    any comments//help??? appreciate..

Just a question major. Are you saying not to use Spbot S&D any more?

    I haven't had problems?

In my opinion, ye can still use spybot. I still do, never have ran into a problem. Well, actually, this isn't quite true. 1.3, 1.3.1, 1.3.1 tx....anyway, 1.4 seems okay. Adaware was the problem child for me. Though, this new version seems better. I still use both. And numerous other utilities. Giant/Microsoft antispyware is a good tool. If you have win 9x, and you want to use Microsoft antispyware, then you are going to need to hunt down giant (I have both).

I agree - I've not had any problems at all with V1.4 of S&D but if Ad-aware finds anything it will hang if I try to quarantine what is has found so I have to dlete what it has got manually

Elmarice doesn't say what version which particular version is giving all the trouble, but I would suggest if the latest version isn't being used to give that a go first before ditching S&D.

Trying running it at bootup or in safe mode and see if you have problems there.

Actually, the problem started when I downloaded a Beta version of S&D....(honestly, don't have the date....prob. way back in January or so...). I've, of course, deleted all associated files and tried the "latest & greatest" S&D several times since then, but......to no avail. SOS

It continues to occupy my CPU's brain @ 100% capacity when it's run....unacceptable. No other option but to power-cycle, btw.

Have not had any luck with any other spyware programs since. (of course, i'm only looking @ freeware...)

Adaware is bull*****--doesn't do a thang for me! (Again, just using the free version).

What I really liked about spybot was the fact that it alerted me & gave me the option to allow/disallow cookies on a site-by-site basis. I knew, exactly, what/who/when/where and so on, and so forth! It was also SO! user friendly when it came to analyzing potential threats and viruses. Haven't found any program since that gave me so much information.

Surely open to anyone's recommendations....I def. need something reliable. (I have reason to believe that I may have a real cause for concern, as far as outside sources "buggin' in" to my poor little computer). Seriously, I need some kinda software to alert me to "intruders."

thanx for any help you might be able to give me!

I also had the same problem with S&D on one of their earlier versions, as it would hang on a LOP check and consume all resources, and had to be shut down through task manager. AdAware and Norton didn't pick up anything, so I went through the same steps as yourself. Reinstalling didn't help either. When the next version came out, I tried it again and haven't had any problems with the applications since.

As other posters have suggested, if you have Win2000 or above try Microsoft AntiSpyware. It is a good application. Two other programs that you might consider are SpyWare Blaster ( supports both IE and FireFox ) and A2 Squared. All are available for download from the MajorGeeks homepage. Hope this helps! ;)

    Well....that was special!

Not only did it use up all resources while creating a "backup registry," (which caused me, of course, to have to "end task"--after 5 mins. of waiting for Task Mgr. to open...uh huh), when I was finally able to end this senseless task, I found that 'Word challenger' had been installed.....

    Very, very special, indeed! wtf

I always skip the option for backing up my registry with spybot.

    What OS are you running?
