Spybot - S & D (which should really be called: "Spybot - Search & 'Slow Down' the PC") has unfortunately; more recently become sort of a dinosaur IMO. :major

I mean, that particular spyware detection program has been around for ages; and was always offered as free of charge; which is great. However, all of its inherent the bugs and many false positives force me to regrettably give it the 'thumbs-down" recommendation on this one. It was actually sort of 'revolutionary' when it initially came out; but currently there are way better alternatives out there. Unfortunately, as time passed; the relic has more recently developed an inclination to lock up more often than not (even during the initial installation process); consequently causing numerous totally unnecessary, nagging error messages. It also still makes errors in flagging many programs newer and even old programs as 'spyware' when they actually are not. Overall there are far others in the spyware blocking category, which perform much faster and better.

As an alternative to SSD, I always suggest using the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware program instead; as it not only allows manual scans for malware, but it also monitors every process and stops malicious processes before they even start. Also, the 'quarantine function' holds threats and lets users review and also very easily restore them as well (if they actually turn out to be harmless). Another thing that attracted me to this tool; was that personal users pay a "one-time "fee ($24.95 for the upgrade for premium version); instead of having to constantly "renew" on a yearly basis as many other premium anti-malware programs out there now require. I usually go for freeware alternatives; but I didn’t mind upgrading as this tool was well worth it; and the contribution helps in the development of further upgrades (as well as the free updates for life).

Side Note: I also really like to run the Javacool Software freeware called SpywareBlaster too; after TimW resident MG Admin (and Jedi Malware Expert) highly recommended it. Also, I forgot to mention that the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is fine too - if users do not want to pay for the upgrade to the premium version. (and new users can view tutorials for both of these apps in the Video Tutorial section) ;)

    Good Luck - COMP

Nothing new here. Spybot started sucking with their "tea timer" way back when and you can find posts by us saying it ruined the program. That said, its still decent and we list it out of respect but it never really came back. You have 3 choices that are the top 3. Period:

    Superantispyware
    Malwarebytes
    Iobit Malware Fighter.

    Game over.

This information and MUCH more is ALWAYS shown at our Top Freeware Picks:

I use the portable version of Spybot S&D on an occassional basis - the Tea Timer is a problem then, and it does occassionally catch junk that is missed by other AV programs (my experience).
