SpyBot Slows Way Down

SpyBot slows way down at CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL. Seems as if the marketing blitz for 1.4 had something to do with "Faster", and the first few times I ran 1.4 it seem to blaze right thru. But any more it seems to really drag. And when it's doing the CoolWWWSearch stuff, it slows to a crawl. It's been on CoolWWWSearch.Feat2DLL the past 15 minutes and the counter has only advanced 250. Is that the way it's sposed to work? Any ideas or comments anyone would wish to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, K.

I believe they are checking for more items in the CWS area then before but I see no problems with it taking 15 minutes to get past that area. My system scan completely in way less time then that.

Perhaps you have a slow PC, a lot more regisrty entries or files on your PC to scan, or your registry or files system has corruption or lots of fragmentation.

Or perhaps you have some malware issues slowing your PC down. This last item we can discuss in this forum. The previous one belong in the Software Forum.

Thank You chaslang for considering my question. About 3 weeks ago, when I first suspected an infestation of some sort, I started cleaning. With the cleaning supplies I already had on hand plus a few others I gathered recently under the guideance of a few other MG'ers, my system seems to be blazing along like it's old self. Because of that, it's very easy to jump to the assumption that the system is finally clean. During that process I picked up Process Explorer. It shows my CPU usage, for the spyware scanning alone, during a SpyBot scan at 85%-90%, but an AdAware scan uses 95% - 99%. Working during a SpyBot scan is a little bumpy, but working during an AdAware scan is frustrating. You mentioned fragmentation. When I defrag the system with the MS Disk Defragmenter, does that defrag the registry also? Or is that what registry compactor in Registry Mechanic is for? Will appreciate any comments you wish to send my way. Thanks, K.

Disk defragmenting and regisrty defragmenting are two totally separate things. Yes I believe Registry Mechanic can do that for you. Always make backups of your registry before doing any modifications to the registry.

Ad-aware has a setting to allow the scan to run in the background which will use very low CPU time. Obviously your scan will take much longer to run this way.

Spybot has a similar setting (called scan priority). How you set these is up to you.
