I've updated to spybot s&d 1.4 and notice that when I run scans now it takes about nine hours, also on updates I keep getting bad checksum.
    Anyone know whats up?

I updated from safe network#1 and that took care of the Bad checksum problem, but still having problem with long scan time.

Well the bad checksums may be down to the site being overloaded with attempts to download the update. Try waiting a couple of days.

As for the long scan time I've just checked my PC and it only took 6 minutes 11 seconds (and that was with three instances of IE6 running + Einstein@Home + 2 instances of SETI  ) so try uninstalling and re-installing from scratch.

Also Doofus in another thread suggested "I have found that SaferNetworking 1 delivers when the other DL sites choke" :)

I have no problem with the updates. I uninstalled and re-installed spybot, updated, and ran the scan and after an hour of scanning it was not even a quarter of the way done. Any other suggestions out there?

What size hard drive, how much has data on it, how much free space. Remember, it has to scan the full hard drive. The bigger the drive (data), the longer it takes. Bazza
PS: Check out (and write down), where it really slows down (virtually, it stops). Mine used to slow down on verifying CoolWebSearch checks, and other I can't remember, just now..
    Maybe CWShredder from: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3019.html
    might help.
    Try also Remover from http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4638
It checks for Trojans, etc. Baz

You could always try the below before/during spybot is running:

    - Don’t watch Spybot-S&D run a scan!!! The Spybot-S&D scan is CPU intensive and watching run adds to the CPU time it takes. Minimize Spybot-S&D while you run a scan because it can take 1 1/2 to 2 times longer to run a scan on some systems with the Spybot-S&D window open due to screen refreshing.

    - Clean up your temporary (.tmp) files:
Start > Run > type "%temp%" (no quotes) > OK > delete anything listed that is older than your last re-boot.

What???? Roughly 10 minutes start to finish on my system with it open. Screen Refresh has nothing to do with how long it takes Spybot to do a scan. If Spybot is taking a long time to do a scan, it is because it has hung on a corrupt file or some form of Malware is interfering with the scan.

I would agree with Shadow, there is garbage out there that tries to disable the better known antispyware proggies or even tries to stop you from coming to popular help sites like this. It's happened to me.

Try running Spybot in safemode. It may make a big difference. Then you may may be able to isolate the startup proggie in question. Good luck.

I also had the problems of slow scan and hangs on CoolWebSearch and others. I solved it in an unexpected way. Somehow the program compatibility had been changed to run on Win95! Right-click the Spybot desktop icon or start menu item/Properties/Compatibility tab/If it's checked, uncheck the "Run this program in compatibility mode for"/Apply/OK

This is majorgeeks malware removal thread. I'm very surprised that nobody has recommended it yet. Its very thorough. I bet it will help. (shhhh, you're supposed to do that before asking for help anyway ;) )
