Spyspotter

I've been trying to help a neighbor who inadvertently invited Spyspotter onto his laptop Not sure when, but by the time he asked, he had two shortcuts on his desktop.

After a little probing and looking, it looks like that software is not what most would want. We tried the easy uninstall route. Got the missing file response. Tried deleting all files (including hidden files), and struck out, although we did reduce the size of the remaining code (based on the startup icon info).

Moved on to the full Major Geeks treatment (in the read this first file), but still have no success, although is it pretty unlikely there are any virus programs lurking anymore.

I've seen an exchange involving this spyware and Windows 2000, but the system we have is XP. Sounds like HiJack This is needed, but I'd need help.

I also get the impression that the ones pushing Spyspotter are flooding the web with links, so a search to find ways to solve the issue are very hard to find. Their link suggests a simple uninstall, but I am a skeptic, having tried.

Anyone out there who can help?
