Hello everyone, I am running win 95 OSR2, WITH PENT 2 , my browser is IE 5.5. I updated SPYWARE BLASTER 3.2 today and I got the usual message saying it was updated. I than , as usual, clicked the update button again and it dowloaded and updated again instead of telling me the program is already up to date. I checked again and it updated again.

Than everytime I rebooted my computer I kept getting a message saying: "an attempt to change my home page had been detected" but it said the home page was attempting to be changed to the already existing homepage.

SO I uninstalled it and reinstalled it in case it had become corrupted. than I updated it and checked it again. I am still having the same problem except I am not getting the attempt to change the home page message anymore.

The only other unusual thing that happened was when I first turned on my computer I got an error message saying : The start up file IPHLPAPI.DLL file could not be accessed. This only happened once and did not occur again on further reboots. I checked the file IPHLPAPI.DLL and it is in windows/system. Anyone know why this is happeneing?

You need to exit all browser sessions before attempting this because that DLL is used by IE. However, I believe it is also load by Windows Explorer. So you will either:

    1) need to have a command prompt window open and use Task Manager to end explorer.exe and then copy the replacement file using the command prompt.

    2) Or you could try booting in safe mode and attempt the copy.

Try solution 2 first. It may be easier for you unless you understand what I was talking about in solution 1.

Hello Chas, how r u, I'll try option 2 and see if that works and because I have never attempted option 1 without Geek supervision.

Hey Chas, that worked. But when I rebooted out of safe mode I got another error saying,
A required .dll file DHCPCSVC.DLL WAS NOT FOUND.
I noticed that my slipstream program did not load up on start up. I was able to log on but neither of my browsers would go to any url I entersed so I went back to safe mode and copied the old IPHLPAPI.DLL file back. This file was obviously created when I installed my slipstream software from my new ISP.

So I am assuming this has nothing to do with my spyware blaster problem. I update spyware blaster and it tells me the update was successful. But when I click on update again , instead of telling me the program is already up to date, it updates itself again. This happens everytime I hit the update button. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling spyware blaster a few times and the same thing happens. Maybe the latest update doesn't work with win 95?

But now that you copied back the old file, do you get the previous message again about IPHLPAPI.DLL ? What is this slipstream software from your ISP? Do you mean that have given you a special version of Windows 95 with a bunch of patches and maybe their software "slipstreamed" in the installation package for Windows 95?

Search your PC for DHCPCSVC.DLL , and tell if and where it is found. I wonder if it is there and just needs to be registered.

Hello Chas, NO the IPHLPAPI.DLL error only happened once. I did a search for the DHCPCSVC.DLL file and it was not found.

The slipstream program is a small program, 933KB, that I downloaded from their website that speeds up the compression rate pages are downloaded. The speed is adjustable, and I have it cranked up as fast as possible.

The only other thing I did was about 2 weeks ago I downloaded and installed , from Microsoft, the DUN 1.3 UPGRADE (dial up networking upgrade). I may have copied 3 files older than the ones already on my computer while installing it.

The wording was a little confusing . It said:

A file being copied is older than an existing file. Do you want to keep this file? this means do I want to keep the file being copied? I should say no, correct? Because I may have said yes.

If I uninstall dun 1.3 that should restore my original files?

I can uninstall both DUN1.3 and the Slipstream program than copy the new version of IPHLPAPI.DLL . Than I can reinstall DUN 1.3 AND SLIPSTREAM and see if the DHCPCSVC.DLL file is there.

Right now my computer is working normally, no error messages. The only problem I am having is when I try to update Spyware Blaster. Everytime I click on update it downloads and installs the latest update. Instead of giving me the "PROGRAM IS ALREADY UP TO DATE" message after the first update attempt.

I can update Spybot with no problems. However after the last SPYBOT update, I ran a scan and had 4 or 5 problems come up, like Avenue A and some others. I had Spybot fix them all. This was about 5 days ago.

I have also updated SPYWARE BLASTER on a regular basis with no problems. I update them both about every 10 days.

What a tangled web... Thanks to these jerks with spyware, adware and browser hijackers.

Uninstalling DUN 1.3 will not put back your old files since they do not save them anywhere. You can try download DHCPCSVC.DLL from here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?dhcpcsvc You may find that after fixing this DLL another one pops up as missing.

I don't think SpywareBlaster 3.2 truly supports Win 95. You really need to thing about upgrading. If you do not want a new PC at least consider getting Win98Se from somewhere.

Still playing around with download accelerators huh? I remember a much older message where you were have problems due to Eacceleration and another download accelerator.

Hello Chas, another day, another problem. We never really established Eacceleration was causing any problems. It just shows up in my Hijack log. LOL

This new accelerator seems to work quite well. The difference in speed is really outstanding. I have been using it since July.

Can I get any missing .dll file from that link?

I have no appparent problems or error messages. Except the Spyware Blaster update.

So when I am installing something new if I get the "A file being copied is older than an existing file. Do you want to keep this file? " question I should say no?

Well thanks again for helping me and my antique out. I see all of you are just about ovewhelmed with this spyware garbage.

No matter how great the invention, someone, somewhere, will find a way to screw it up for the rest of us.

    WHAT A TANGLED WEB!

I found a way around the DUN 1.3 thing. Microsoft has a DUN1.4 UPGRADE "THAT CORRECTS KNOWN PROBLEMS WITH THE 1.3 UPGRADE"

Ya gotta love Microsoft. They know how to keep you hungrey for more.

Maybe I should search for a DUN 1.5 upgrade and save myself some time.

    WHAT A TANGLED WEB!

I believe you are misreading the message about "a file being copied".
These messages occur when the files you already have on your PC are newer than the ones being copied. So you want to "keep" the one on your PC. The answer is "yes" They typically say Recommended or something like that in the popup message.

I believe the message looks like this:

A file being copied is older than the file currently on your computer. It is recommended that you keep your existing file.

The existing file is the one already installed.

For the SpywareBlaster 3.2 update, as I said before. I don't believe Win95 is fully supported.

And as far as what DLL's are availble on that site. There is a long list. I'm not sure if they are compatible with your OS though. They don't really indicate an OS there. Why do you ask? Are you missing more files? You should be able to get most items you need from your Win95 CD.

I was going to check with you before installing the DUN1.3, AND SHOULD HAVE, so I wrote the message down. It was worded:
A file being copied is older than an existing file. Do you want to keep this file. Yes or no are my choices.

sort of confusing the way they worded it. Anyway the way it reads, it looks like (to me anyway) they are asking if I want to keep the file being copied.

I downloaded the DUN1.4 upgrade but didn't attempt to install it yet. In case I get the same message installing this, I wanted to see if , going by the way the message is worded I should say no or yes.

At the time the new version of Spyware Blaster 3.2 came out, I emailed Javacool's tech support and asked if it was compatible with Win 95 and they replied that it was. They also stated that I should uninstall the previous version first than install the new one. I have updated it about 3 or 4 time's since I installed it with no problem's. After I update it I always check it again to verify that I get the Program is already up to date message. That, of course, doesn't mean that there might be something in the new update that doesn't work with Win 95. I'll e mail their tech support again and see if they have any idea's.

The reason I asked about the .dll files is because you said in a previous post (#10) that after I fix the DHCPCSVC.DLL problem I might get other .dll's missing. I was going to ask you if I could just extract the file's off my win 95 cd. That answers that question.

I noticed that with both error messages the Slipstream program didn't load up on normal boot. Could these files have been installed by the Slipstream program? I checked properties on the IPHLPAPI.DLL file and it said it was created on Aug 12, 2004. Which is around the time I switched ISP's and installed it.

Answer Yes! They are asking if you want to keep the existing file on your computer.

I cannot help you too much with this one since I do not know anything about the Slipstream program. If they are putting modified versions of system files on your PC, you may need their versions.

    Hello Chas,

So yes is the answer, Too bad they didn't word the question a little clearer.

My computer is working normally , no more errors, so far. Knock wood.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me out.
