Hi. I have a computer (hard drive and monitor) that I am proud to say is almost 10 years old and still works really well. I only had 1 major hijacking issue (the infamous about.blank) and was able to fix it thanks to this support forum! My question is would doing all the steps before using Hijack This be a good preventive tool to use? Or is it not necessary unless you are having issues? I already use automatic updates to my Windows XP, Yahoo Anti Spy, Search and Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Ad Aware, Scotty for virus monitoring and AVG to do weekly scans. With all these tools updated and used frequently is it still a good idea to do more thorough scans such as Hijack This?

this is what i can add regarding HJT
If your anti spyware has failed to defeat a particularly insidious intruder, this program could be your last hope. it really needs only the assistance in MALWARE section
cause i never heard that this program failed its purpose

It is imperative to the security of your system that you keep your antispyware apps, antivirus and operating system up to date. Hijack This doesn't do anything towards preventing or repairing malicious software. All this program does is reveal potential vulnerabilities in the system it is run on. So yes, it is a good idea to run these programs, and keep them updated.
