    Hi!

I believe I have been subjected to a browser hijacking attack because my homepage became changed to refer to a search page and repeastedly changed itself back to that page regardless of what I did to change it. I installed and ran Ad-aware (discover Alexa related object), Spybot (discovered Alexa related, DSO exploit) and have even run HijackThis. My system now seems clear and I don't have the problem of changing search pages.

However I now have no access to the internet via any of my browsers (IE & Opera). I connect to the internet but it won't return any pages. I've tried pinging addresses like news.bbc.co.uk but the ping doesn't work (doesn't even return the "request timed out message"). I have a apache on my system for development purposes and can retrieve pages no problems. I can also ping my own system.

I have tried running LSPFix but it does not do anything.

    Ok now for system specs:

    Win 98 SE
    1.6GHz AMD Athlon
    512MB RAM
    40GB HDD

I'm very greatful for any help that anybody can give me with this.

    Cheers,

    Ian

Exactly what did you do with HijackThis?

    Post a current HijackThis log.

Do you use a router? If so, can you ping your router and DNS server IP addresess

I ran HijackThis after seeing about it on another site. I ran it after I had the no internet problem and discovered a couple of filters text/plain and text/html.

    I don't use a router - just 56k modem.

Last night I got so fed up after trying LSP Fix and various WinSock restore apps with no success to simply reinstall windows. However I did that and still had problems. I am currently reinstalling windows after formatting my drive and am going to take it step by step this time.

    Any further suggestions are welcome.

    Cheers,

    Ian

if you're using windows and you're going to take the reformat / reinstall route, I would like to introduce you to nLite. It will help you "blend" service packs into the installtion so when you install, you have the service packs installed and no need to hit windows update for the service packs. Just residual post sp updates.

Yes, after reinstalling make sure your follow the steps here: How to Protect yourself from malware!

You must get your Microsoft updates asap. With a dial-up connection this is going to take some time unless you have the Microsoft CD they were mailing out for free a while back with all the critical updates for Win98 on it.

Get you protections in place as quickly as you can.

Edit: And look into what Kodo gave you.
