SQL error

Here's a little background first: the PC wasn't booting. The Windows XP logo would come up with the scrolling bar under it, then it would go to the black screen that normally appears right before the blue Windows welcome screen. Once the black screen appeared, everything stopped. I booted into recovery console, ran chkdsk /r and that at least got Windows to load to the desktop. There is this SQL error (screenshot attached) and I don't know much about SQL. There was also a video driver error but I think I took care of that. Anyway, take a look at the screen shot, and if you have any ideas, feel free to post.
    Thanks!

    Hi dlb

I take it this PC is not being used as a SQL Server?

Its likely that in the repair that the SQL Server client front end is erroring in its service, to be honest disable this if the PC is not going to be connected to a SQL server,

goto Services ( services.msc ) and look for Microsoft SQL Server VSS Writer in the list if Stopped you could start but disabling its Startup type is better, AND also if SQL is never going to be used on this PC, its likely some applciation or someone installed something SQL, so look in add/remove and look for references to SQL and remove.

If they are using SQL on this PC, then the dump log needs to be looked at by someone who understands SQL servers better than I do.

I'm pretty sure that this PC is not being used as any type of server; the owner of it barely knows how to surf the internet. When a PCs internet home page is set to MySpace, that's a fairly good indicator of who is using the PC and what it is mainly used for. So I followed your advice above, and then I just uninstalled the 3 different SQL programs that showed up in Add/Remove Programs. Turns out the video card was bad too. After about 15 minutes, the PC would lock up for about a minute, then it would start beeping (like a post beep) for maybe 15-20 seconds, then the screen would go black for about 5 or 10 seconds. When it came back the colors were set at like 4 bit and the resolutiuon went to 640x480. I pulled the card (an old 4x 16mb AGP) and replaced it (with a slightly less old 64mb Geforce MX440), so that's working, and now the SQL error is gone. Is it possible that the SQL programs could have messed with IE or internet connectivity? It's having troubles connecting to the internet. It connects most of the time, but it takes up to 3 minutes for the home page to open. I get the same problems using Portable Firefox, so I think the problem is deep in Windows networking....
    Thanks...

Yes possible that SQL has caused connection issues, but not a major or common cause, may need to do the normal steps of

    • Update NIC drivers
    • Clear all junk and internet temps
    • flushdns resolver cache
    • Even rebuild the TCP/IP stack
at a cmd prompt ( admin logon ) type netsh int ip reset c:\tcpiprebuild.log
    • Check for malware
    • try the winsockfix

I followed the steps here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259/en-us to repair the Winsock and it didn't do much. I have also tried disabling the onboard NIC and using 2 different PCI network cards, and still no dice. I ran Dial-A-Fix and sfc/scannow, uninstalled IE7 back to IE6, ran IEFix, cleared all the junk/temp files, cleaned cookies, defragged just for good measure (I know a defrag has no effect on internet connectivity).
I will try these things today. If they work (or not) I'll let you know.
    Thanks ;)

I did all of the above, plus a repair install of XP Home, and it still doesn't connect to the internet as it should. It takes over 3 minutes for a page to come up, if it comes up at all. If a page does come up, that's it... no surfing past that works. If you try, IE either freezes and must be closed from the task mgr, or you just get an hour glass forever. Before the repair install I removed all the Google toolbar type stuff, all Symantec software, and 5 Java Runtime updates. I think it may be time to save the data, format, and reload..... anybody have any ideas before formatting?

    Hi dlb

No sadly no other thoughts as you have covered all the ones I can think of upto now, sadly some issues have no clear answer.

OK- backed up over 5gb of pics, music, Word docs, etc. Formatted and installed XP Home SP2 and drivers. The first thing I did was setup IE to use the LAN and try to surf. NO SURF!!! :*** :mad :banghead Again it took forever for anything to happen. SO I disabled the onboard NIC in the BIOS and installed a DLink 530 PCI network card. Same thing. No surf. :( I shut down, pulled the DLink, installed a trusty 3Com Etherlink into a different PCI slot, went into BIOS and changed the PnP OS setting to No. Booted into Windows, launched IE, and now I'm surfing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:clap :celebrate :dancer :hyper :drink :D :dood :cool

Now I just need to migrate 5gb worth of data back from the external USB drive and I'm done!!!!
Just thought ya'll might give a :crap but probably not ;)
    Have a happy Easter!

Thanks. I read everything to try and learn. Apparently a bad NIC can slow system down and not all cards are pnp.
