I have a file named sql.log on my hard drive approx. 290 MB. What is this and is it safe to delete? My hard drive is only 6.4GB and it is full. My OS is Windows 98 SE

Does anyone know what this is

sounds like it's a log file from a sql server. Name it SQL.TXT and open it in wordpad and see what it says.

Dynamite, you might have a lot of other crap on your computer as well. Depends on how well and how often you do housekeeping. Try the following, all free and all 3.

    Cleanup! http://www.stevengould.org/
    EmpTemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=1575
    and CrapCleaner v1.10 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

I once ran Cleanup! on a business PC and it found and deleted over 60,000 (yep) files.

How big are your index.dat files. I delete mine after nearly every session on the net.

They (there are more than 1) just grow and grow after every session.

You might consider de-fragging, if you haven't already. I use Norton Speeddisk for my defrag. Not the Microsoft defrag.

I use W98SE as well. Bazza

Maybe burn the sql.log onto a CD. Make sure the CD data is readable on your PC, FIRST, then delete it. You can always reload it if something crashes. Any luck trying the 3 that I recommended? Bazza

I was gunna say sounds like query caching for a windows component... ODBC apparently.

Have you tried starting in safe mode/clean boot to delete these files? It looks like some process is stopping them from being deleted.

Make sure all programs are closed when you run the cleaners... it looks like you had MG open whilst running it... which is why the cached version of newreply.php was not deleted...

I tried closing everything except explorer and systray and then ran cleanup. Same thing.
I tried starting in Safe mode. Same thing any other ideas why it does this?

Dynamite, Damn, I just finished typing a long reply to your queries and when I went to send it MG said I wasn't logged on. Don't know how as I was replying to a post ? I am off to the markets for fruit and vegs so will compose a reply offline and post it tomorrow. (Cowboy, I am a slow learner). Just quickly, EmpTemp is not automatic like the other 2. You have to do it manually. Baz

Dynamite, sorry for the delay. Damn computer (AOL) just logged me off in the middle of my second reply. Trying a third time. EmpTemp is fairly simple to run. Just work your way through the tabs. Had a couple of computer crashes and had to restore from backup IE and Avast. Lots of ZA intercepts so I don't know what is going on. Norton advises me I have duplicate file names in IE so will have to resolve that. Also checking out a couple of job offer/interviews and getting ready for the visit of ex-wife's twin brother and wife. So much to do so little time. Also damn slow leak in rear kerb side tyre (sp) necessitated tyre change. Enough of my excuses, check out EmpTemp for yourself. If you can't get it going let me know and I WILL reply. CrapCleaner and Cleanup! get 99% of the crap, anyhow. Bazza
