I have a strange situation with cloning not working on a windows XP installation. I am running a desktop machine using a 2008 year motherboard with xp to power a legacy home automation system. The pc uses a SSD main drive. I want to have a backup for that system so I purchased a Kingston SSD. No matter what cloning program I use, no matter what procedure, the cloned copy will not run. It starts up and then XP stops booting. Says
'do you want to start windows in safe mode
    '
and just repeats the unsuccessful booting.
Please advise why XP will not accept a cloned drive.

What type of system board connector does the source drive have? EIDE or SATA? How is your SSD formatted? Also, never de-frag an SSD.

Windows XP does not natively support SATA. It can cause headaches.

    It is connected with SATA.

The new Kingston SSD was not defragged.

What programs have you tried? Are these drives the same size, or the new one bigger? When you're testing it you remove the original and put the clone in the exact spot?

The latest cloning program we tried was symantec. The main drive is WD GREEN 240 GB. The Kingston is 256 GB. The mounting for the clone is the same wiring ie remove the drive and insert the clone in the same mount.

Also tried:AMEOI, Acronis, Norton Ghost and Macrium Reflect.

Ghost should do a 'bit by bit' copy, so those SSDs should be an exact replica...try boot XP install and do a repair with the recovery console option on the new imaged SSD.

The core issue may be is that XP cannot recognize the Kingston SSD controller.

OK Thanks. In this case, what is the solution. Another ssd?

Technically XP is abandonware. A compatible drive controller is crucial to functionality. Another SSD could be the solution, but it needs to have a "legacy" controller, i.e. XP compatible.

Older Sandforce or Marvell controllers would be compatible. Version dependent.

They said it boots just not successfully, wants to go to safe mode. Since they are cloning the drive, they have the controller driver in the OS already.
That is why I suggested to do a repair "install".

What is the Kingston SSD model? Is the BIOS set to SATA or EIDE?
