I installed windows 8 pro on my hard drive and then updated to windows 8.1 pro. I have recently purchased an ssd drive. Should I install windows 8 pro and then upgrade to windows 8.1 pro, or use the software that comes with the ssd drive to install the new drive and copy the software?

Try the #2 clone method first.

Satrow is probably right because the 8.1 upgrade is pretty smooth. You can move what you have to SSD as well and then upgrade it but if it were me, I would want an image of 8 just in case.

Thanks, I think i'll make an image of the drive, and then install windows 8 and the do the 8.1 upgrade.
