Currently planning on my win7RC Ultimate upgrade to win7 Ultimate retail.

Should I go for one smaller SSD drive? Or Raid 0 my two Velociraptors?

Any opinions? I always shudder at Raid 0, since there is no redundancy, though I do do backups.

Yes, I've read many articles on the subject and seen many charts, I just rather have real world opinions on them.

    Hi

Depends on which SSDs your wanting to get and what generation they are the current generation 1 SSDs are ok, but not as fine tuned as you'd want for a main PC, the 2nd Generation drives have much better controllers and Intel X series are the leaders but you will pay through the nose for them.

I have 2 1 Gen Crucial SSDs in a test PC and just need to find time to re-install the final version of win7 on that PC to re-test them however they worked fine in the RC version once I just tinked with some settings as SSDs dont need or like a pagefile, defrag, system restore and some NTFS naming conventions but their are some tweaking apps available for this, although the RTM of Win7 is suposed to by default turn al this off once it recognises SSDs.

I did install the two SSDs I have in raid0 and initial speed test was amazing compaired to my two Raptors in Raid0 (bare in mind the SSDs where on RC Win7)

Benefit of SSD over traditional HDD is that access time for SSD is 0.5-0.8ms whereas HDD is 7ms+

So personally I would go with the Raptors for now and jump to SSDs in 12months+ time when they are more fine tuned, TBH I just had some spare cash to blow on testing SSDs and they are $ for MB much more expensive to use than HDD at present.

    Good choice my friend :)

I will once I get time update this thread with info on my SSDs in Win7 RTM and how they fair against my Raptors as bet and RC versions of OSes as you know are not best to benchmark.
