Hey all, I'm not sure if this rightly belongs here or in the Networking section, but here goes anyhow.

I'm in the process of trying to learn SSH. Admittedly, I have got basically no where. I'm using SSH secure file transfer client (which, as far as I can tell, is a subset of SSH secure shell version 3.2.9). I'm stuck on this dialouge:

I was able to read a little about this here:

    http://www.ssh.com/support/documentation/online/ssh/winhelp/32/connect_to_remote_host_dialog.html

This didn't quite get me there. I am currently trying to connect one computer to another computer on the same router (not because I don't know how to file transfer over my network or because I think my network lacks security, but rather because I have nothing else to test on). I'm not sure what to type in this box. I know the IP of the other computer on the network (192.168.1.3). I just don't know what goes in the user name box. Is it my windows login on the other computer? Is it the "device name"? Or do I have to configure some sort of SSH profile on that computer before I can connect to it? So far, nothing I've tried has given any results.

Both the computer I am running and the remote computer use XP home. Both are use windows firewall, but I doubt that that is the issue because I have yet to receive a prompt about the firewall blocking SSH.

Note: I understand there are easier ways to transfer data on a local network. This is just a tool I'm using to learn SSH.

    Hmm:eek:

Can you recommend such a software? Someone mentioned http://www.cygwin.com/ to me. Any good?

What would be ideal for me is something that uses no or basically no resources until it receives a connect request.

you need to run an SSH Server on the machine you wish to connect to, as has been somewhat mentioned.

OpenSSH is a great tool and its free. http://www.openssh.com/

once thats up and running with a list of user accounts, you can use Secure Shell to connect to it.
