I've read every thread I can find on this problem
Tried all the solutions I can find :cry
Just now d/loading the tools mentioned on one thread

I built this desktop myself about 12 years ago and had no problems with it until 3 days ago
Started to get blue screen /updated all windows patches /ran antivirus and antimalaware
Pulled out 5 trojans and blocked circa5000 dodgy sites .
Now after running well for two days I get the dreaded black screen .:eek..after going through the bios setup routine. I get the Asus splash then *fizzle* it just goes to a black screen ..The green on light stays on but the psu and hd turn off even the case and graphics fans .

    Mobo = asus A7V8X
    radeon 9600
    120gig deskstar HD
    LG cd r/w
    Liteon dvd r/w
    Kingston 512 ddr
    (now out Infineon 256mb ddr 400's cl3

Dual boot win xp pro up to sp3
and Debian squeeze Linux 6.0 If i remember right

In abpout 16 starts I got as far as the Grub loader twice then !splat!

:cry:crybaby Not to put too fine a point on it ...I put about 1000 euro into this . my pride and joy . and I really would hate to have to bin it and start again..
Any new fixes for this problem anyone ?
    yours in hope

Have you tested the power supply (psu) ?
Let us know what you have tried, to save duplicating the work you have already done.

Yes I have tested the psu and all voltages are correct in the bios hardware monitor. I stripped the whole box down and cleaned out all the dust etc . put it back together meticulously . Disconnected all peripherals.Reset bios to boot from cd disc .Reset the bios by taking out the checksum battery . reset to boot from floppy > some success but wrong version as filesystem is ntfs . (I always preferred fat ) If I could remember how to make a ramdrive floppy I feel that this could work . (Fdsk chkdsc ini etc .)
Oddly enough when I got back tonite from college I pushed the start button and it got as far as the login to Debian just before it all crashed again. The monitor works fine but I did uprate the refresh to 70. about 24hrs before all this happened .
Installed are Avira Antivir and.Comodo.10bit suite(which is good and the latest edition) . And tried to get parent logic to run (,it was a useless download.)
. . with the other progs shut down as I had a premonition all was not as it should be . I pulled 5 trojans and about 5000 dirty cookies . Dumped and blocked the sites.
By dawn I had to stop as too exhausted to keep going

Just tried again got to Linux logon >all kernel loaded etc and just before user gui . Crash again.

Just tried to logon to XP same result .Tried with old Gateway windows universal boot disk version 95b .Config sys error and some other corruption passed too quick to read ..
I'm really wishing I had a good PC startup floppy

just found xp install disc . tried that .got as far as loading kernal debugger. then splat !!!

I've pulled the HD and put into an old gateway ,with 512mb and a celeron mendicino chip ,as master on the secondary ide. It will boot to linux main part and also to the recovery part.
It will not boot to XP
the monitor just goes blank .
I put the HD from the gateway into the ASUS box and that will post but it crashes on windows start up.
    .

Right now the only reason I will keep trying and posting is that somehow this thread will help someone else and with your help we may avoid this problem in future

If it will boot from the old gateway- have you tried running a virus scan from the Linux that you can boot into ? The recovery part-- do you mean where you can use f8 etc: ?
If you tried to boot into XP on the gateway, and it got that far, it would bluescreen, same as the HD from the gateway did in the ASUS.
This is normal windows behaviour for a different system to the one installed on.

You say you have the XP disc , now- It is possible, if you had virus, and trojun's to get rid of, that the boot on XP has become corrupted.
With your XP disc, start the install, and choose the first repair option, BE CAREFUL TO CHOOSE THE xp PARTITION and at the flashing cusor, type in

    fixmbr
press enter, and at the next prompt, type in
    fixboot
    press enter.
    Try then booting into XP.

If you can boot into XP, try next to boot into Linux.
If you cannot boot into Linox, go to the Linux help section on majorgeeks
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=50

I am not into Linux, very much, but you may have to look at re-installing grub- but let the Linux help section help, if you get that far.

Update ...I have the feeling that there was an issue between the CPU and the XP partition ..
!1 I took the cooler off the chip and found that the paste was rock hard ...
!2 I slaved the hard drive to another puter and I could not access the xp partition .. But the Linux partition was still in good condition ..
!3 I put an unrelated hard drive into the original puter and the just as the new install screen appeared the puter went black screen .. all shut down Psu etc . but the on light stayed on ..This happened at the same place on each of 4 attempts. CPU or MB Bios or cmos problem .. I cannot be sure ..I'm still trying to compile a fresh install floppy .. But cant remember all the files I need to do this

My next step will be to learn how to use G-Parted and see if I can access the XP partition or recover it .If not I will chkdsk and mark bad sectors ,then remove the XP partition and use the whole drive for Linux ..

May the force stay with me ...

If cmos battery , time and date will not stay correct.
Keep stopping on re- installing XP in same place is often a hard disk problem (chkdsk as you said.

Update:- Today I took the dual boot hard drive and put it onto an ide slot on a pci card in a HP t860 which is a serial ata drive normally and was booting to the sata drive .. I set the du bo to slave and switched on ;; I got the unexpected
The puter booted to Linux partition on the drive on the ide slot , and the partition acted as though nothing had happened and it ran normally . I am using the Linux part to write this update .. I can access the sata drive and read all on it .. But the xp partition on the ide drive will not mount .. I haven't (in my excitement) made a note of the error messages which appear at the bottom of the screen when I try to open the XP partition .
I'm beginning to believe that Linux is bullet proof..
I also think that I'm addicted Although not yet a geek I'm getting there LOL

:confused update:-After a couple of days the linux would not boot only windows and the linux part was rated raw . The grub loader had completely dissappeared The pc would only open on a third hard drive(win) that I installed in desperation (bios ineffective).

this probably wont help anyone . But today after a few days engaged on another problem ,I came back to this one . Now I am even more confused ,,, I disconnected the (win) sata drive leaving the pc with only the ide card harddrive
. and the Grub suddenly appeared .. Furthermore the pc booted to the linux part and wine found and interacts with the win part .. I was going to condem this hard drive . but now after 3weeks trying to find out if I could rescue even part of the win part I have the whole drive working as normal .. All that remains now is to regrease the cpu on the asus MB and put the hardrive back into that PC and see if it works in there.

The whole business has been very frustrating .. There must have been some self deteriorating "mole" on the windows part . I have no other explanation .

Anyone got any ideas\. Could help someone who has experienced the same problem :cool

I'll post more results as I get them
