Something is definately wrong with my computer. Just out of nowhere, my start menu disappears. Along with all the icons on my desktop. Leaving me to manually shut down the computer. I don't exactly know what to do... it just happened out of nowhere.
Any help would be great. Thank you!

What OS? And do you mean it happens while you are already logged in? Or when you boot up?

I'm using Windows Xp Professional Edition.

I'm already logged into my computer when it happens.. its kind of random when it happens also.

So sometimes (or for short periods) it is OK?

Have you run a full virus scan since this has happened?

I'm running the Panda scan right now. It normally takes a while so i'll post the results.

Do you mean the online scan? Or do you have the full virus package?

    Just the online scan.

You need a full application on you computer. If you do not have one, get one of the free packages here on MG's. Here are two good ones. I think slightly more peopler prefer Avast!.

    Avast! Home Edition 4.1.412 : http://www.majorgeeks.com/download1968.html

    AVG Free Edition 6.0 Build 698 : http://www.majorgeeks.com/download886.html

(Thanks to Xflat for typing up the below in a message make it easy for me to cut & paste)

You should also look into a firewall:
    http://majorgeeks.com/download738.html Kerio
    http://majorgeeks.com/download3356.html Sygate

And also SpyWare Prevention Notice I did not say scanner...yet
    http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html SpyWare Blaster...
    http://majorgeeks.com/download3045.html SpyWare Guard..

    SpyWare Scanners/Removers
    http://majorgeeks.com/download2471.html SpyBot ( I don't activate the TeaTimer)
    http://majorgeeks.com/download506.html AdAware

At any rate did the online scan find anyhing? If no, get a full scan running and also use
Ad-aware and SpyBot. Then get back to us.

Panda Online Scan says no viruses found.

I already have AVG. No viruses found.

Is Avast better than AVG? In what ways?

I'm going to run Spybot and Ad-ware right now.

    AD-ware found 5 tracking cookies.

And Spybot found 5 DSO Exploits.

Avast and AVG are both good. It's just that Avast seems to get more votes by quite a few of the people here.
