In response to the instructional post with subject, "TO: Everyone Seeking Driver Help":

    1. MOTHERBOARD MAKE/MODEL: Didn't know what info to include; Ran Everest Home Edition; Attaching Log (didn't know which report to include so attaching both System Summary and Hardware-Related)

    PC MAKE/MODEL: Dell Inspiron 5160

    2. I thought a video driver update would help improve video play so I downloaded one from dell.com. Upon restart, after installing I got a blue screen with the error message that a device driver is stuck in an infinite loop and the program causing the trouble was "xgiv3". I restarted again to be sure and got the same message. I am now running in safe mode w/networking because it won't open otherwise. I feel like such a dolt. Here are the juicy details in case any of them will help:

I THINK I downloaded/installed the XGI Driver (version 2.116C, A10) from a recommened download list on dell.com. Here's the link to the list that was recommended when I entered my service tag # 1BGWG61:

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&SystemID=INS_PNT_P4_5160&TabIndex=&typeid=-1

I was just now scrolling through my Add/Remove Programs list to verify that that was indeed the driver I downloaded. I clicked "show updates" because I thought I had been updating a driver and wanted to see the troublesome update in the list. Two items had a bunch of things listed under them as having been installed today (2/18/2011). They were: "Microsoft.NET Framework 2.0 Service Pack 2" --AND-- "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 2". (I remember the words "Microsoft .NET Framework on the download box that appeared when I thought I was downloading the driver - maybe it's part of it?)

I also noticed a couple of other updates listed as installed today (2/18/2011). They are: "Security Update for Step By Step Interactive Training" and "Hotfix for Windows XP". I include this in case they're related.

At the bottom of the Add/Remove Programs list I notice "XGI Volari-XP5 Display Driver" but it doesn't list any updates underneath. In the whole list I didn't see any thing like "nVidia" or "GeForce FX" which was the other download option (link to dell recommende download list above), so I must've downloaded that XGI-Driver. (I double checked this because I had planned to download both, but I'm pretty sure I clicked on the XGI download first and thought I'd go back and download the nVidia next because they were both "recommended". Apparently just because dell recommends a download doesn't mean it's a good idea.

    3. Hardware and software specs relevant to my problem: I assume this information will be in the reports I am attaching (?). I know I use Windows XP, service pack 3. Let me know if you need me to make a different report than the ones I'm attaching.

    4. I have taken no steps but I'm thinking of stepping to the store and buying a whole new computer )

    5. Try to locate the driver yourself: I have no clue how to do this, but that's what I was trying to do by digging around in the Add/Remove Programs as described above. Again,I assume this info is in the Everest attached report.

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Re: Start Up Error AFter Download: Device Driver Stuck in Infinite Loop (due to xgiv3

    Greetings, Coco Beans.

No need to download the nVidia driver - your report shows that your machine is running the XGI graphics.

Since you're able to boot into Safe Mode, I'd suggest first that you try to restore your computer to an earlier time:

    1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.

    2. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click to select the Restore my computer to an earlier time option, and then click Next.

    3. On the Select a Restore Point page, choose a date prior to when you first experienced the problem (if available - if not, choose the earliest possible), and then click Next (note: a System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make - click OK).

    4. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next.

The system should then reboot to an earlier XP configuration.

If this is the case, please let us know, and we can then go forward with resolving any further issues. If the System Restore procedure is not successful, please advise, and we will take other steps.

Caliban: Thank you SO much for taking the time to help me out with this. I finally have had the opportunity to get back on here after all the hullabaloo with the computer (I'm finishing up a degree and writing a paper every few days and getting bogged down with a bunch of work, haha). I never did the system restore because when I turned the computer back on it started working and I got a message that said it had recovered from a serious error so I left it alone. I am saving this message for future reference though. I suppose I don't need to delete the updates I had downloaded if everything seems to be running smoothly now, huh?

    Thank you again!

Re: Start Up Error AFter Download: Device Driver Stuck in Infinite Loop (due to xgiv3

    Welcome back, Coco Beans.

Agreed - if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If everything's running smoothly, then there is no need to roll back any drivers or Windows Updates.

Hopefully this was just a one-time glitch. If not, and if you experience any more problems, just let us know - we'll be here.

Good luck, and thanks for the feedback. :major
