Start-up error message!

I' m working with a Dell XPS R350mhz Pentium II minitower base with MMX technology and 512k cache.
Here's my situation. Suddenly when I boot up I receive this error message that says "ERROR STARTING PROGRAM"
DLL file, PSAPI.DLL was not found"
I click on close and continue on my way. I'm certain this is not a good thing but don't know what to do. Help.

Things to check

Check your win.ini or your system.ini

Have you installed something that did not work or removed something?

It sounds like something was left behind, the files was deleted but the information/link to that file was not removed when the uninstaller ran.

Some digging around leads me to believe your infected with spyware. Run Ad-Aware and look for any programs in startup like loader.exe that you did not have before. A good registry cleaning afterwards is a good idea as well.

I would have gone the same route as MA especially if that file is in your startup list..

BTW what OS are you using?

but a strange twist is that Symantec's fix for a Worm "Pretty Park" installs Psapi.dll http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/fix.prettypark.html

many thanks for the advice guys. i'm working with windows 98 and i make it a ritual of running adaware before leaving the pc for the day. i did try to remove kazaa and nearly got rid of all of it. some of it is literally impossible to delete. i'm not at my computer at this moment to tell you which part of it i can't delete but when i get home i'll look and report.
