start up error

a friend rang me last night with a problem he is having with his pc. when he tries to start it up the desktop starts to load then an error message appears in a black box saying. OBJECT NAME NOT FOUND. then the pc tries to reboot and the same error appears. i have never came across this before and was wondering if you guys had any ideas. it's windows xp home edition with SP2.

 

Can you get to safe mode and run check disk in repair mode then sytem file checker?

What was the last hardware/software changes made?

i will get a look at it later and try to boot it up in safe mode. how do i run check disc and system file checker when in repair mode?

 

Delete temp files, internet cache and empty recycle bin.

run checkdisk

in an explorer window right click on the hard drive
choose properties>tools
choose check now
tick automatically repair file system
tick automatically repair sectors
click start
If required click yes perform check at restart
click Ok,OK
restart

run system file checker - it may ask for your windows cd.

start>run>typein
cmd
press return
at the > prompt typein
sfc /scannow (note double n)
press return
type exit to close command window
