    Hello

A friend's PC wasn't working right so I offered to take a look. Problems accessing internet, running deathly slow and suddenly rebooting for no reason. They're a complete novice and weren't running any virus software (!!) (+ no firewall, no anti-spyware!!!!!!!) so first things first I downloaded Free AVG which immediately found 2 viruses. One of which was "windriv.exe" which I healed. From that point on, the computer has run perfectly except at startup, i get a "can't find windriv.exe" message box. i press ok and everything proceeds normally.

The computer is working really well (after doing the usual spyware scans and installing SP2), but this message is annoying i don't want this to cause malfunctions later - plus I'm not keen on giving back the PC, assuring them it's fixed, and then they keep getting this message which is sure to freak them out...

Any ideas what is causing this message? is windriv an important file or does this message just need to be turned off and how would i go about doing that? Found a thread on another Forum which suggested turning off system restore, running an online virus scan like Panda (found a further 2 viruses)then running a spyware prog like Spybot then turning back on system restore but this didn't work.

    Cheers

    No luck there I'm afraid.

After trying your suggestion, i was having a browse for ideas on anything else i could do for this badly maintained PC to show it a some badly needed TLC and came across the READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support thread. Although my prob wasn't obviously spyware related and I wasn't having any other probs with the PC, I figured it was worth a try anyway to give the machine a fighting chance before i send it back to it's unloving owner

Anyway, upshot is, despite none of the online scans or downloaded progs finding any probs, the startup error has gone. Go figure?

    Thanks all

As the PC was running without protection, I strongly suggest you pay a visit to the SPYWARE FORUM and follow the advice in the "stickies".
