start up problem

Hi, I am new to this site and am grateful for any help you might have to offer.
When I start up my computer ( Dell Dimension L700cx, running windows 98) it gives me the message: the c:\installer\id53.exe file appears to be corrupt, reinstall the file and try again.
I ignore it and it seems to still work ok, but now I have had difficulties downloading files from this site.
Can anyone suggest what to do?

The first thing I do when Windows tells me a filename is Google it. Looks like you need a disinfection.

ok I'll check it out, however I do have spybot and adaware, but still have this prob.

Is it that when you try to install you get a command line window flash up and then disappear?


If so, it may be a mirror problem. Tried 3 files tonight same issue, D/L'd off one of the mirrors, solved.





Just tried another D/L, seems ok. T'internet............ tut!

 

I believe that this is a problem regarding Search settings,which is corrupted

seems like it could be some kind of trojan horse, if spybot is not getting rid of it, what other software could I use ?

 

no the message just comes up when I start up the computer, it prompts me to click on close, which I do, then I carry on as normal without problems....
but I wonder what it is

 

Ok if this is a file that I don't need, can I just use the find file function and then delete it?
