I just built my computer with a amd 3400 and asus k8n-e deluxe motherboard. Now iam using the hard drives from my old computer. My old computer came with windows xp already loaded on it so i dont have the os disks. I cant get into windows (expected) is there a way to change the drivers and settings for it prewindows with out haveing to format and reinstall windows? Also it only detects the keyboard once and awhile its now turning into never the keyboard goes into the usb. It detects the mouse fine which is also usb.

I just ran into this problem too . I'm not taking mine any futher then the solution I did because I'm just building a back up system . I wanted a little fasted one with a new drive and mirror the old set to save hours upon hours of rushing a set up.. I could set the new one up on my free time AND have a copy to
drag and drop a lot of files and setups .....

I also bought a new hard dive for the newer one cuz the old ones over 5 years old .

Installed the old drive to the newer board and processor and nothing !
Hit F8 to get to bios to try diff boot sequence ,,nada .

I'm not sure but I think the HDs have drivers too and or protocalls that get set once windows is loaded .And I think some are just not compatable.

Like the dummy I am I tried to hook up both drives at once without setting the master,, slave jumpers ...Once I did that woolaa theres my old set up !
So I a least could copy from it .

In your situation ,,,I'm sorry to say but looks like it may not work .
Try to boot in safe mode ? with without promp't ? If you get in that way ........
Get on a friends computer and go to manufacters site for the latest drivers for the drive ..

If you do have to reinstall xp it may not let you cuz gates a tight wad and will gives us only one or two installs ..

Call a local small town ISP dude and see if he will sell a licence .
Mine will sell a copy at near his cost at 50 smacks .

Let me know your solution when you figure it out .
    Good luck hope this helps.

well first off you should enter bios and enable 'usb keyboard support' if you want to be able to use it in pre-windows environments.

secondly try hitting F8 just after the post screen, this will give you some alternatives in which to start windows. choose safe mode, then when you're in (if you get in, otherwise come back here) uninstall all hardware you can think of. that goes for the video card, network card, etc etc... (do this in device manager, just delete the devices)

then try to start up normally. if you manage to get into windows it should now start to install some hardware, in which case you must provide win with drivers as needed.

if this doesn't work I'm afraid there isn't much you can do about it. there are just way too many resources that needs to be changed for the o/s to work. instead try to get hold of a windows cd and reinstall the whole lot. that's ten times better, and may also be your only solution. too bad you didn't get a cd bundled with your first computer.

in a way you're right, but harddrives will work outside windows as well, meaning they need no software. there are 'protocols' built-in in bios that takes care of it. but windows still installs the drives, for it's own purposes, no driver related thing though. If you wanted to know :)

I have tried safe mode and it wont let me in. Also i have usb keyboard on in bios. I think it was the keyboard itself i replaced it and its fine now. I do have the office xp disks just not the os. I also have a boot up into harddrive disk that came with my second harddrive. Also emergency disk with resource settings too if i had windows corrupt.

so try the emergency disk..? it's not gonna get more emergency than this ;)

The disk didnt work (expected). Could i change the hardware profiles in in xp to match the new one? How would i go about doing this? Also would a windows xp startup disk detect the setting and change them during boot? I realy dont want to go and buy windows  since i all ready have it.

    OK,

This is what I did when I upgraded. (no reinstall required)

    1. Boot with everything in the old machine as normal.
    2. Set IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller drivers to Windows Defauls
You will need to force this to happen through device manager
    3. Set Display Adaptor also to default Windows VGA ( if replacing VGA Card)
    4. Move hardware to new machine, and boot.

Update drivers as needed. I placed the drivers on my hard drive before moving and loaded them as requested.

I Moved from Soyo Dragon K7V+ to Asus A7N8X Deluxe without reinstalling XP. All other hardware remained the same
