i've been on MG for a while and tried to help people with there probs trying to contribute back for all the help i've been given and i've read posts saying sometimes useing ccleaner to get rid of start up programs dosent always work 100% and apps will still start up in the back so i'm wondering if there is a better program i should be using to clear my start up

If you just want to stop some services starting up, you can do this , either in msconfig, by going into services, and click box for hide Microsoft services, then checking the items in the startup tab. If you know what the program is , you can untick it, if you do not want it, if you don't know, don't untick.
Otherwise, right click my Computer, click manage , click services and applications, click services, and in the right hand side are all the services .
B e careful, if changing anything, write it down, so that you can return it to original if it causes any problems.
There is Black Viper to tell you what to look at.

I've never had that problen with CCleaner.
Sometimes, it's the program's uninstaller (I think CCleaner uses those uninstallers) that leaves odds and ends laying about After uninstalling, look in your programs folders and delete the leftovers, then run the cleaner and reg tools.

Like using registry cleaners - always do it carefully - not everyone agrees, but I use it for troubleshooting shortcuts.

WinPatrol is the most user-friendly free start-up control app out there:

PS: Do NOT use msconfig to change "Services!" Big trouble may result.

Startup Control Panel comes in two versions and works well at "getting rid of start up programs" and has a very easy to use as well as intuitive interface. This program allows users to control and configure which programs run immediately after your computer boots up.

Startup Control Panel Standalone Version 2.8 is available here at MajorGeeks in the Process Management section. This version simply runs without any installer.

StartupCPL is also available which adds an icon in your Control Panel.

Side Note: Additionally, I often use the site Startup Applications List which allows you to search for any entry in startup that you are confused about or perhaps don't know what to do with.
