    Can anyone please tell me how I can rectify a problem with my XP installation, I recently had cause to re-install said o/s and have inadvertently put a new boot path in (path known as /?/) so every time my machine is started it asks whether I wish to boot Microsoft Windows or /?/, no major problem as they both result in my machine starting correctly. However I would just like to remove the /?/ path to reduce any further confusion, I have checked my boot.ini and it states all paths are correct. Please help I am without a clue

    Remove the path in your boot.ini that does not match the default path.

    [EDIT]
    Start > Run
    type CMD
    OK

    Command terminal will opens, type the following:
    CD.. Enter
    CD.. Enter
    Edit C:\Boot.ini Enter

    Edit opens, remove the unwanted line, save, exit, reboot.
    [/EDIT]

    Hi, I have tried your advice, thanks for the prompt reply. However when I open the Command Terminal the cursor simply flashes and no matter what I do I am unable to type any commands

    If you can't enter commands in the command terminal, you will need to use the recovery console.

    Follow these directions:

    1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to restart the computer.

    2. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to repair the Windows XP installation.

    3. Press C to repair the Windows XP installation by using the Recovery Console.

    4. Type the number that corresponds to the Windows installation that you want to repair, and then press ENTER. For example, type 1, and then press ENTER.

    5. Type the Administrator password, and then press ENTER.

    6. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after you type each one, where drive is the drive letter that you typed in step 4 of "Method 2: Use the Recovery Console," of this article:
    edit c:\Boot.ini
    A list similar to the following list appears:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=

    NOTE: If you are Using Windows XP Home, Remove the word Professional from the path line.
    If you receive the following message, the Boot.ini file may be missing or damaged:
    The system cannot find the file or directory specified.
    7. If the Boot.ini file is missing or damaged, create a new one. To do so, follow these steps:
    a. Using Edit.com, to create a boot loader file similar to the following boot loader file:
    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

    NOTE: If you are Using Windows XP Home, Remove the word Professional from the path line.
    b. Save the file to a floppy disk as Boot.ini.
    c. Type the following command at the Recovery Console command prompt to copy the Boot.ini file from the floppy disk to the computer:
    copy a:\Boot.ini c:\
    8. Type exit, and then press ENTER. The computer restarts.

    Unfortunately the recovery console didn't help me either, kept saying it didn't recoqnise the commands I was putting in. In the end I had to repair the installation in question which is now A OK. Thank you for your time and effort.
    Cheers once again
