Startup item: what if I disable an essential one?

An elemental question, I'm sure, but here goes: Using Windows Defender to select items to disable from my startup list, what if I disable one that's essential for the operating system? I have XP on one machine, Vista on the other. Some things, such as my Avast anti-virus program, I recognize on the list; others, I don't. Also, if I disable something like Adobe Acrobat, what happens if I need it? Thanks.

Most things you will just need to start up manually as you need it, including adobe acrobat. Anything you're unsure of do ask.
