Startup Monitor Recommendations ???

It is my understanding that shutting down little used programs in the Startup Menu by using Selective Startup is not the recommended way to disable those little used programs. I am looking for any recommendations for Startup Monitors that safely disable little used programs in a manner that lets Windows operate normally i.e without the StartUp monitor doing the same thing as using Selective Startup. Am not looking for anything exotic or fancy, just a basic program that would allow me to disable and latter enable those programs if I needed them in the future.

Any suggestions or personal experiences with such programs appreciated.

Are you talking about programs or services?

If it is services, just click Start/ run, and type services.msc

A left click on one of the services will give an explanation of it, and a right click/ properties will give you the option of disabling it, etc. AbbySue's link has a thorough list of services and suggestions about disabling them or not.

If it is programs you are talking about, startup CPL is about the best out there. :)

Sorry guys, I should have been more specific. It's programs not services. My OS is XP Pro

    AbbeySue,

Sorry about any on going confusion. The programs I'm referring to are ones you find in start>>run>>msconfig>>startup. Programs like Microsoft Money, Nero Counter, Wingman (games contoller software), Mixer, etc. Before disabling them I would check with a reference like Pacmans Startup List.

    Thanks

    UMMMM . . . Abby?

I point this out cuz some people have had trouble locating the program after it's installed

A'Yup, you're right about that Abby. I installed it and then went on the Great Control Panel Search. After 20 minutes I officially give up. Where does the gol'durn thing hide in the XP control panel? No evidence of the icon anywhere. Help!
PS: I will of course be saying, "Oh . . . um . . . doh" a few minutes from now, when you point out that it's right exactly under my nose.:D

dont forget going to run, then typing in msconfig. You can dissable lots of stuff there (but I recommend sticking to the startup tab so you dont screw stuff up ;) )

OKAY, SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH ...

What's wrong with using msconfig or the Startup Menu in XP to disable programs???

    Thanks,

Many things that start with XP dont appear in the startup folder.
By using MSCONFIG, you can see a full list of all the programs that start with windows.
Even most virus's and trojans will appear here,if they start with windows. This makes it easy to keep them from starting if you have a problem.

It is a very powerful tool. BUT, fooling around with MSCONFIG anywhere other than the startup tab can cause windows to boot improperly , or not at all. But the startup tab is pretty safe.

    WELL, THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT ...

Yeah, that's what I thought ... MSConfig, that is. I use it all the time in Win 98. I've not used it, however, in XP, but I'm assuming there's decent similarity in usage.

After reading, I figured I would offer my suggestions. StartupCPL is small, free and works excellent. A good choice. If you want to MONITOR things that are loading without your knowledge, I suggest Startup Sentry. Good luck.

Um . . . yeah . . . it was under "other control panel options" in the pane to the left of the standard CP screen. (See what I mean . . . doh <slaps forehead> that's why a lot of the time my name is, Bill-you-dolt!).

I'm still new to this Hi Tech stuff, so bear with me if I've missed something.

I went to Mike Lin's site for the Startup Contol Panel 2.8. If I understand it correctly, it seems that it is possible to launch this program from a location other than the Control Panel if you download the Standalone Exe version of Startup Control Panel 2.8. Is that correct???

Its a control panel applet, a bit odd at first, but you get used to it. We have it for download here as well and similar in the admin tools section. Hope it works out, report back! :)

The absolute best one that I use and applies to XP as far as I know is Startman
It's no longer available from its original (and originator?? site but last time I looked was still here

Try them all and pick out the one that best suits you
