HI. Having invested in a new Gigabyt ga-k8n51gmf-9 motherboard with xp2 OS and AMD 3500, after my old Jetway with Millenium OS. I have unexplained problems on startup.ie When closing down I use the start menu shutdown, this closes the computer down ok.I then switch off at my power socket. On switching on the next day or time, I use the startup power button on the case after 3 seconds it closes down I can repeat this for ever.I tried using the soft restart and sometimes it would start the POST only to stop with the warning "illegal disk replace and press enter" and locks up.Are you with me?.Any way I discovered that if I do not switch off the mains power I can start up normally.I have checked connections and power settings many times but I cannot find anything wrong.
My power supply is 450w and worked ok on the old system.
    Has anyone the answer Please

Could be that your new setup, especially the motherboard is reliant on a continued power supply even though the computer is off. That being the case I would look at the MB instructions to throw some light on the problem. Have you considered using a good power supply filter (antispike) and leaving the power supply on continuously?
    Cheers

    Hi Robert
I am using a antisurge device. The MB manual does not throw any light on the subject.Yesterday everything went pear shaped again and I had to reinstall all over again.Totally.The option to maintain the power is at the moment my only recourse but is not satisfactory for safety reasons when the PC is unattended.I will keep looking for the answer maybe someone will come up with it.
Thanks for the help.I guess its nice in australia.Regards Liverpool uk scouser.

Sounds like a hardware issue. I switch mine off at the power point all the time with no issues starting up again.

You might have to strip out as much hardware as you can then try starting up till you find the problem.

Also wouldn't hurt to do a memory test.

I had this problem with an emachines this winter, after a power supply failure. The manufacturer sent a power supply of same size - and this started.

I bought a slightly larger PS from Compusa, and all was well!
